It happens quite often but most are not 4000lbs.

Happens with remarkable regularity even now, in both former Axis and Allied countries.

I've seen the maps in the UK EOD archive, all hand marked in pencil. The whole archive was in the process of being digitised, and it's a long old process. Map scales have changed, and all the original plots have to be transcribed onto modern maps, and digitised, as well as being assessed for accuracy (not all Civil Defence teams were brilliant at map reading and marking ). Then the map markings also have to be compared with the lists of impact sites that were reported/investigated/actioned. Hundreds, possibly thousands of articles of UXO still lay beneath cities and towns all over the UK.

My former Troop Commander nabbed himself a Queen's Gallantry Medal for dealing with one on Portland, Dorset...
