So there i was popping along with the roof down on my TT 3.2 in the fast lane of the M5 enjoying the sunshine when i heard a bang and rattle down between the drivers seat and door. As all lanes were a bit chockers i couldn't pull over very easily- had i little look around but nothing seemed a miss.

When i pulled off the motorway i opened the door and out dropped a 4" M12 bolt which had probably been flicked up by another vehicle.
On a closer inspection of the car i found a deep gash out of the paint above the centre of the windscreen so the thing must have flown across my face!! No more roof down on the motorway me thinks!! But there again what are the chances of it happening twice!!

The fast lane is a dangerous place to be.

I once got hit in the middle of the forehead by a stone flicked up by a car in front overtaking over some chevrons while driving my MGB.

It hurt like a bd but the only thing damaged was my vocabulary!! I suspect if it had gone in my eye it would be a different story...

Yes when i questioned my mother in law about hogging the middle lane her excuse was that it saved her having to pull out to overtake people in the slow lane and faster cars could just overtake in the outer lane- old lady logic ?

I saw a small rock heading my way when driving roof down last year.

It bounced on the scuttle forward of the windscreen and missed A.The windscreen and B.My head.

This was also 100s of miles away in Southern France so a bang on the head/cracked screen would've ruined my trip.

Nope, most people's logic; the fact that most people refer to them as the "slow" and "fast" lane is why I strongly believe lane discipline is so appalling on motorways in this country, people don't want to go slow or fast so they stick in the middle.

Even my daughters driving instructor called it the "fast" lane, If a driving instructor is instilling it in his pupils then you have no chance.

Anyway, glad to hear that the bolt missed you OP, could have been rather nasty otherwise.

I think it is wise to wear sunglasses (if you don't wear glasses) to give some protection. It won't stop big objects flying into your eye but then look what happened to the F1 driver (Mika Hakkinen?) when he was hit by a loose wheel nut...and he was wearing a full face helmet....

Lucky man OP - glad my Z4 is a coupe but then I have never wanted a convertible.
However I would agree with others - there is no "fast lane".
3 lane motorways now have the empty lane, the "Doris Honda Jazz/CRV, etc." middle lane and the German lane (as a BMW owner this is obviously supposed to be reserved for me) smokin
Most things we get from the US aren't great, but I so wish we had their pass either side rules!

We have - if the traffic is moving slower in the outside lane and you don't chop and change you can pass on the nearside.

What's nice in the USA is people don't get upset about being passed on either side - here it's like you called them a very bad person and screwed their cat or dog

As a US resident I can tell you that the last thing you want is over taking on both sides! That means that lane discipline is out of the window. Fortunately, overtaking on both sides is limited to a few states.

As I understood it - overtaking on the inside wasn't legal but accepted as OK provided there wasn't an accident as a result

Most of the southern states I've driven in it was very common

Ahem, the right question to be asking is "what are the chances of it happening again?" To which the answer is, the same as the chances of it happening the first time!
