Hi all

My brother in law has broken his inboard cv or possibly driveshaft (not taken apart to check yet) and needs to obtain a replacement for me to fit. It's a 98 4.5, did these have weak cv or driveshafts? As my 96 4.2 seems bulletproof.
What I need to know, is it worth savaging the oe stuff or changing the whole lot for slightly better stuff. It will remain standard, so I don't think it needs bulletproof ones (as the cash is needed for new suspension in the new year) but he doesn't want to scrimp either.

Suggestions please

Thanks Darren

With all things transmission I would try the below link. Give John a phone call will probably tell you the drive shaft numbers and from what car they were originally off, very knowledgeable firm.

CV joints are the common Lobro joint shared with a lot of vehicles, page 17 of alternative parts list, for prolix supplier (Tanguero posted) very helpful post I use them.

CV are pretty robust, more likely the shaft is snapped.
Brummie has updated ones from Dave Mac propshafts, this seems the way to go if you have a lot of power or craving for drag starts or burnouts.

It wont be CV's, i have snapped EVERY shaft going except the DM ones, its a fit and forget part with a lifetime warranty.
I have never had to replace a CV in the 6 years i have had the car, even though i think i have 4 spare ones kicking around, and OE drive shafts, which would snap as soon as...

ok thanks mate. I know the DM shafts are bombproof, a little ott for a standard 4.5 i feel. are the RP any good at 1/2 the price?

In all fairness they are probably fine for normal power and use, I do remember them saying that they had never ever broke one before, so a dubious honour that ended up costing me over £1000 in drive shafts...

For me the DM shafts were worth the £140 extra to never have to take it all apart again!!!

You've lost me there.

£356 for DM shafts
£217 for RP shafts
£139 difference.

My theory is, standard will snap again, so you're at least going to fit RP shafts @ £217 anyway. RP shafts have snapped previously. An extra £140 for the DM shafts, in my eyes, is worth never having to lift the rear uprights and split the driveshafts apart or worry about driveshaft failure again.

RP are £181 INC VAT EACH
DB are 297 PLUS VAT or £356 INC VAT EACH

so £362 vs £712 Yes the DM's dont snap, but who else apart from non standard Cerbs have snapped the RP ones? I agree with spending money, not scrimping and getting the best, however replacing the gaz nickels are also high on the replacement list.

I didnt think the RP ones were standard, or am i mistaken?

im not trying to be awkward, its not my car, but i am trusted to fix it and i want to make an informed decision from experience of you guys.

Just my 2p but I have had the rp shafts on the race car for 6 years. Not one breakage. 4.7 AJP with 12" slicks and a plate differential.

I'd go RP in your situation. Notwithstanding the super powered LS issues, they are well throught of and if Mike has 'abused' them on track with slicks etc then they will be fine for many many years for a road going Cerb.

Are you 100% sure that they are priced each. There's no way I would have spent £712 on 2 driveshafts! Unless I had a very funny 5 minutes.....
