Good evening!

I recently purchased a pelagos which I love....had it just over a week but have noticed since I brought it over the last week (working nights) that the date doesn't flip over at midnight, last week was a couple of minutes past and now it's circa 5 minutes past midnight...the date doesn't tend to flip over and changes slowly from about 2350 to 0005 and then flips suddenly.
I know some movements it takes several hours to complete the change over but there is no 'flip' where as with this sometimes it slowly changes then flips over but it always after midnight....

Im currently of the opinion I should back the watch as I've only had it 9 days... I'd happly taken another in exchange but am not willing to wait and have it repaired after owning it for 9 days.... For info I have paid list from a UK chain..... Am I being reasonable relevant the date issue???

Thanks in advance

That is entirely normal.

Thanks zod,

Trying to gauge if I'm expecting too much - I've had more expensive watches and much cheaper automatics that have flipped over at midnight on the dot. A Google search shows that this can be rectified when serviced, as the watches brand new I wouldn't expect it!

Any other pelagos owners have the same issue??

Cheers

This. It's quite common for the date to advance as described, and in my experience with autos quite rare that it will advance bang on midnight.

Doesn't it use a standard movement? Sounds normal to me. I wouldn't even expect it to do it on midnight once it's serviced.

When the date changes depends on when the hands are put on and the accuracy of the date disk teeth. The hand positioning is under the control of the maker but, for stock movements, the disk accuracy isn't.

Bear in mind that each day on the disk is about 11 degrees and, for a non-instant date mechanism, the disk moves half that over maybe 3 hours in the "run up" to the change. So 5 minutes either way represents an error of around 0.15 degrees on a (usually stamped aluminium) tooth tip. For an instant change the sums are similar but have extra variables like jumper spring strength to worry about.

This is the sort of thing that improves with higher grade movements and closer tolerances, although whether the risk of getting confused about what date it is sometime between midnight and 5 past is woth the premium might be questionable wink

I'll qualify my earlier statement. The way the OP described the date advance is the way it is on my Breitling. My IWCs both click over on midnight.

My Rolex SD4000 changes between midnight and up to 4 minutes after midnight. Keeps very good time too, gaining about 2 seconds a week, so I've never felt the date change was anything but normal smile

Thanks moose. Interesting as the sd4000 will hopefully be my next purchase... I was actually intending to buy one last week but took the pelagos as a daily instead as I could use the extra money elsewhere now but am saving for hopefully next year sometime!

Your mistake was buying a watch with a date... No date is so much better wink

As others have said perfectly normal smile I find Quartz changes on midnight pretty much spot on, all my autos have a few minutes here or there.

Some brands do and some dont but it should always be in on or around the midnight hour to be acceptable. I wouldnt lose sleep over it but if you are awake and watching it at midnight then you clearly are!!!
