Are there any brokers here on PH that could help with this?

I'm going to buy buy a car tomorrow, and a customer of mine has offered to join me - he is the one who found the car, so I'd like to take him along.

I've suggested if I buy it, he can drive my car home (the Golf R). He is 77, but is by no means an old boy, he regularly collects cars for his son who's a motor trader.

He's a homeowner, retired, has several of his own cars, no accidents, no convictions...

Cover needed for tomorrow only.

Any help gratefully received.

Jon

Can't you just add him to your policy?

Unfortunately not, my insurer won't cover anyone over 75. Plus there is a conflict as I have business use, and he's retired.

Are you buying from a dealer? There may be a week's insurance included that would cover him to drive it while you take the old one.

Buying from a trader that operates from home, no 7 day cover included AFAIK.

I'm buying a classic Beetle, so would rather he drove home in the Golf, and I drove the Beetle...

Do any of his policies cover him to drive other cars not owned by him or rented? My policy does.

I would imagine so, on a third party basis - mine does too. Would have just been nice to have some fully comp cover in place.

Then:

He drives you to the dealer in his own car. You buy the Beetle and each drives home independently.

We're just going to go with 3rd party cover on his policy driving my car.

The car I'm heading to buy is up between Kettering and Rugby, 100 miles away... didn't want him taking his Interceptor or old SL all the way up there.

All sorted now smile

He'll be in my car, so I'll be in a 45bhp Beetle trying to keep up with a 300hp Golf R.

Excited though, always wanted a Beetle, never owned one. I hope the saying about meeting your heroes isn't true!

20 years ago I had a Jaguar Sovereign 4.0, and my friend had an old Beetle. In comparison at how I wafted silently from 50-70 in 4 seconds, he said that doing 50 in his Beetle, which was about as fast as it would go, was like 'breaking up on re-entry' hehe

Haha!

I'm looking forward to trying to steer it on the quarter-lights - apparently it can be done.

It's come along at a good time though... I'm taking both the Jensen and Stag off the road for some fettling over winter, so will give me a fun usable classic for the winter time meet ups.

That's not a conflict. I have business use, but that doesn't mean other drivers on my policy can't be retired! Business use isn't compulsory. Pleasure use is allowed too!

Only going on what they told me. They referred it out to the underwriters who are Zenith, they said no.

Well you spoke to an idiot. I can understand that their upper age limit may be 75, but if they told you that you can't add a retired person to your policy because you have business use, then you spoke to a complete cretin who doesn't understand how their own policy works.

Which wouldn't surprise me.
