Hi,

Mate of mine has an Onyko TX-NR906 which as far as we can make out doesn't have ARC. It is connected via some kind of Matrix device to a Samsung Smart TV. All of the cables are CAT5e that gets converted into HDMI via a small box.

I'm trying to work out a way of getting sound from the TV to the amp ala ARC. There is no way of directly connecting the TV and amp with an optical cable or the like.

Is there such a device that I could plug into the amp that would receive sound wirelessly from the TV, that it would see as a receiver it could send sound to?

Apologies for the vagueness of the post. I've said to him that an ARC-enabled A/V receiver would probably fix his problems overnight, but in the short term he wants a quick fix.

TIA for any help smile

I presume its distance and location that's the problem with adding a cable? I.e. the Amos in a different location to the TV.

Do you have any spare Ethernet cables between the TV location and the amp?

Distance isn't so bad, he could run a cable through the wall behind the TV into his media cupboard, but that would probably be a last resort.

Possibly has a spare ethernet, will check.

Why is there no chance of connecting an optical cable??
Seems like the obvious solution to me.

What model of TV does he have?

I've just checked on my 2012 (2011?) Samsung ES6800 and it has both ARC on HDMI2 and Optical digital out. Also just looked at the spec of a current H6240 and that also shows that it has ARC and Optical digital out.

Thanks for input on this.

Seems like he's screwed.

TV is a Samsung F8000 series 65", but the optical out only carries 2.1 channel audio from any HDMI source, presumably this is because of HDCP/DRM restrictions (not every TV does it though).

ARC isn't possible because his Matrix doesn't support it over HD-BaseT.

5.1 sound apparently only works when the TV's own internal tuner is used (e.g. for On Demand stuff through the TV's own apps, etc)

A quick fix is to use the headphone socket with a 3.5mm jack to phono cable.

Is there any kind of external tuner / sky box type of thing being used? Might have other options if you wire the box to the amp and avoid the telly for sound.
Hope that makes sense

If the amp has an optical input, which it sounds like it does, then if the tv doesn't pass through 5.1 you need to connect the optical cable to the original source...ie bluray player.
