There was a program on the telly about it a few years ago. Some scientists took 10,000 samples of plants and animals and didn't find one abnormality, so they did another 10,000 samples and again found no abnormalities.
The program interviewed some scientist who said "what you have to remember is that radiation is a piss poor carcinogen"

'Dont touch the bumper-cars and dont walk on the moss' - Is the advice I was given.
...I decided against it altogether in the end.
Isnt there some concern that the concrete 'casing' that was constructed over the main disaster site is starting to fall apart, and if it should collapse then another dose of contamination will be sent up into the atmosphere?
I bet the workers that 'had' the original job of putting up that concrete arn't around to go back and it patch it up now.

This guy may have agreed - nuked in both Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Died in 2010 aged 93. Unpredictable, rather than piss poor. The program interviewed some scientist who said "what you have to remember is that radiation is a piss poor carcinogen"

They're currently building a massive dome over it at the moment, a huge project....I decided against it altogether in the end.

I thought that, no birds.
But then I just read they have spotted brown bears in the area, the first for 100 years - so maybe the wildlife is doing okay.
Might have been the same show another prayer above saw, but the one I saw which was a BBC job, described how there had been some mutations. I.e. a bird that normally had red markings might have had blue. But, good old evolution and natural selection cane into play. The birds with non red markings fizzled fairly quickly because none of the other birds were attracted. But then I just read they have spotted brown bears in the area, the first for 100 years - so maybe the wildlife is doing okay.
Other stuff I have read from time to time suggest that wildlife is doing OK without us! Might be that radiation doesn't have the time to kill off some species. A cat might only live for 10-15 years for instance.

About as close as I ventured to them! Although not as bad as they're made out. Certainly plenty 'hotter' spots I can think of! Muncher said:

I suspect it's a bit further along now but this was the state of it in April.
I'll be out there again around April time next year so will be interesting to see how it's progressing.
I'm by no means connected to any of the work going on out there! More the photographic interest of the place.
