I am looking to spend around £750 on a vinyl only system, it will be used mostly for classical/film music.

What would you recommend for this budget?

Spent just over that amount on a Rega RP1, Denon Amp and some Boston Acoustic Speakers. The speakers were a bit more expensive than I would have liked but worth it.

These Speakers get very very good reviews

Are you willing to look at used kit? You'll always get more for your money, but of course there is more risk and you'll want to fit a new belt and cartridge to your tunrtable, which may put some off.

Alternatively, try to track down a vinyl friendly dealer and go and have a listen. I'd suggest an independent like Deco Audio in Aylesbury or Divine Audio in Desborough as they seem more vinyl savvy than the bigger chains.

Have a chat with VEX on here. He's sorted me out some very good deals on hi-fi before.

Just bought a mint rega planar 3, audiolab 8000a and some monitor audio ms 10I pearl speakers until I unearth some epos es 11 on eBay. Cost was under 400 quid.

^ You'd have to spend a lot more to sound a bit better than that, nice choices.

Thanks very much I had this lot when I was a student and upgraded to an lp12 and an all linn setup which I sold a few years ago when I bought an I pod. Like the op I'm planning to rediscover my record collection but couldn't justify an lp12 again and this sounded bloody good back in the day.

Spot on. I run a Rega RP1 and I was tempted by a used planar 3, the Audiolab 8000a is awesome it was my fathers before mine and I will pass it down, they do benefit from a good service though. I've got a pair of KEF C40s which are good but I could do with an upgrade. How you got that lot for under £400 quid though is beyond me!

To be honest when I bought my lp12 it didn't sound that much better than my old rega.

Turntable was 155 quid on eBay

170 quid for the amp on preloved Inc postage

Speakers 40 quid Inc post and biwire cable from ebay

Turntable shelf was 40 Inc postage via e bay

I had some epos es14 years ago but thought I ought to try and seek out some es 11s as they are a little less fussy over amps and source having said that an 8000p is cheap now days.

Then the Linn wasn't set up properly, even an 80s LP12 with an LVX on it should blow a Rega out of the water.

I think your right, it had one of those S shaped arms on it which I swapped when I had it set up at sound advice in loughborough, things improved after this.

Rega deck/Nait 3 or better still Nait 2/Royd Minstrel speakers. Should come in on budget and sound stunningly sublime.

The S-shaped arm was likely to be the Linn LV V, I know as I've still got mine attached to a Dunlop Systemdek II. Good arm (at £100 in 1986) for a mid-range deck like the Systemdek. Totally outclassed on an LP12, but oddly it was the the standard arm fitted by most dealers to get the LP12 out of the door for a decent price and then gave them the opportunity to upsell to the LVX.

Dear T,

another 2nd-hand-ebay-bought RP3+8000A fan here.

I'm still looking for the right speaker though. I've been through MS Carnival/Festival/Pageant 3 (currently using, good clear allrounder). Ruark Talisman II - great for acoustic & prog but messy with rock. Rega Ela - great bass from tiny driver but recessed treble,

regards,
Jet

I've got a Rega Planet ..... maybe not the best, but I like it smile

Ohhh and mine came with all original packaging, and arm set-up card and other associated paperwork.

Did cost me though from memory £450 about 12 years ago, and then more money getting it serviced, and new cartridge put on

Edited, added link below before someone tells me that what I'm playing my vinyl on is a CD player.
