Hi everyone, will there be a 991 GT2?

If not, I think the 997 GT2 would be a really good car to buy for residuals, I can see them rising steeply. Might look into one for a next car!

Currently drive a 997 GT3, love the look of the GT2 though.

Cheers,
Andrew

Keep the GT3! It's a better car.

Not sure there will be one, no news on it yet since the Porsche engineer hinted that it's unlikely they'll make one.

I'm thinking about buying a 997 GT3 for track days next year and to give my GT2 a bit of a rest as I've somehow managed 20,000 miles in 3 years. Having test driven a GT3 I think it's a superb bit of kit, not sure it's as suited to road driving as the GT2 but I'd use it on track mostly. I'm pretty sure you'd miss the noise and steering of the GT3 in a GT2, it's similar in many ways but feels much less compromised on the road.

Both great cars but for different uses, GT3 ultimate track day car, GT2 ultimate road car.

Driven a 997 GT2 CS vs 997 GT3 CS on track and other than throttle response and other engine characteristics, they felt largely similar to use. I only really preferred the GT3 because of the engine note.

I'd be surprised if they didn't bring a new GT2 out eventually as it is effectively a parts bin special sold at a huge premium. Imagine the speed of the thing if it was a current GT3 with the Turbo S' engine!

If I were a Porsche marketer, I'd push for a GT2 and make it something truly special...Then I'd use that new-found brand strength to ease the transition from N/A to turbo engines in the 2WD cars with a degree of elegance in a way that I don't think they currently can with the existing Turbo.

I'd say it's actually essential that they DO produce a DESIRABLE GT2 if they do indeed plan to move into turbocharged territory for the 'normal' cars.

Interesting point. Although is the 991 Turbo S not already one of the most impressive turbo engined cars out there at this budget? Porsche have said that taking away the 4wd would put the GT2 at a disadvantage over the Turbo S, to make it go quicker I guess it would need another layer of trick electronics, something that moves further from what a GT car has always been.

If they use the GT2 name my guess is that it'll be put on a Turbo S with 20 more bhp, GT3 based PDK and interior and a new aerokit.

Hmmm, well put... I'm not particularly 'up' on the GT2 generations....but could that not have been said about the 997 and 996 variants as well? You could probably argue that the GT3>Carrera evolution is now diluted in the same manner with the metzger no longer being a factor.

In the past my impression of the GT2 is that it's been a GT3 with turbo's bolted to it.

I do not buy that Porsche disadvantage diatribe. I can't see the issue of turning up the wick on a lightened turbo s, losing the 4wd and circa 650bhp for a new 991 GT2. The Macca 650 S has no issues being quicker than a turbo s. Or even better make the 991 GT2 RS with a mezger and manual gearbox and 700bhp! There's an idea!

Maybe the Gt2 has been killed off quietly so there is room for the 960.

I think with 700hp & RWD the widowmaker tag would be resurrected

The P1, and La ferrari have approaching 1000bhp and do not seem to have an issue. Seriously with modern day TCS just can't see an issue. Macca 650 S , Fezza F12 have that sort of power and are 2wd and no-ones complained about them being a handful.

I think it's to do with the mechanics rather than the whether they want to. I heard it was because of issues with the rear wheels steering on a rear wheel drive car. Also would be difficult to make it faster than the current car that it's so planted.

If the GT3 has RWS, why would it be a problem on the GT2?

Also, 4WD is great in the wet but in the dry it just adds weight and drivetrain losses. If the GT2 were to inherent the wider front track the GT3 RS gets then - on a dry track - it would be significantly quicker than Turbo S, especially when you factor in suspension that is more track biased.

I'd buy a 700hp GT2 RS. My only concern is whether they could get the weight close to that of my current 997 GT2 RS which is 1280kg dry. I like manuals but could also live with a twin clutch setup and flappy paddles. Gavin
