After ,months of force feeding rusks and milk and dinner and well everything, I finally managed to grow the little one big enough to fit in to his recaro start.

Having manouvered the seat into the back, I then duly put him in the seat, only to find that the impact cushionthing doesn't seem to fit properly and he looks squashed with it in. Also it seems very difficult to get the seat belt around the impact cushion .

Could anyone oblige with a photograph of their little one strapped into the seat with the impact cushion fitted as I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here.

In the end he seems to be comfortable with just the seat belt across his lap and adjusted down so that the shoulder strap fits across him nicely. However, looking at the instructions it suggests that that should be when he reaches 15kg or so which I'm sure he's not quite there yet - where are those !

Its been quite frustrating as I bought the car to transport baby and I want to make sure that he's safe in the back with the way I have it now. Thanks for your help.

I guess you'd know having one, but when I was getting one for my sisters little un I was supprised to find you can't have them facing forward till they are quite some age (sorry can't remember what it was) as the ribs arn't stong enough to hold them...

Yeah you are correct they have to be a certain weight/age to be able to fit in a forward facing seat normally about 9kg over six months. As he nearly 13 months hes been in a forward facing seat in the Vectra for ages. the recaro start is smaller from a base of the seat perspective so fits in nicely in the back. The problem is getting the baby to fit nicely in the seat with the impact cushion attached, as soon as it goes near him he kicks off big time and it doesn't look right either, it does look right when hes in the seat without the impact cushion i'm just not sure about one year old being starpped in with just a seat belt normally they're held in with a harness etc, it just seems strange using a normal belt !

Found this link which shows the impact cushion in place. I do know that there are people who use them but have never seen it. It doesn't look particularly comfortable does it ? But I think its the only option when they are as young as yours. My youngest has been using the Recaro Start (without impact cushion) since he was about 22 months. I'm not sure at what age you can do away with it.

Hi there! Sorry to butt in, but I'm on the verge of buying a Cerb based on the fact that I could fit a child seat in the back (my daughter is 16 months old), so I read your comments with interest and a little concern.

Is the Recaro seat generally the recommended option for infants in the back of a Cerb, or do TVR have their own recommended seat? I am just under 6ft, and a friend has told me that there is no way I will be able to use my existing child seat, unless I fancy driving around with the steering wheel between my knees!

Thanks for all the replies.

The baby in the picture in the link looks slightly bigger than my one, and he's smiling whilst strapped in looks drugged to me (weed so young ?)

But it does look like its the impact cushion or nothing.

To reply to the later post, after much searching the Recaro Start (the Pro one comes with the aforementioned impact cushion) is about the only seat that I found to fit (apparently the TVR one is a recaro start as well). 'Normal' baby seats won't fit as the base is too big and don't sit properly on the back seat squab, when he was about nine months old his head just lolled forward when in the recaro start as it is quite straight backed, and he was hidden by the impact cushion.
Now he fits in o.k. but the impact cushion pushes up to his shoulders so his arms are almost level with the top of the cushion so he's quite restricted which leads to the 'what are you doing to me dad kick-off' as mentioned.

Funny thing is when it pops and bangs he now says bang bang bang and kicks his legs I think I have another TVR convert already !

Excellent! Thanks for the tip. I've got the recaro website book-marked, ready for when I finally take the plunge and buy a Cerby!

the issue of kids and back seats seems to be an ever recurring one,i don`td know about the reccarro seat , but the tvr one has a cushion similar to that shown on the link, it does`nt look too cumfortable but my daughter got used to it and has now grown to a size that she no longer needs it.
i know they kick up at first but buy some ear defenders they soon quiet down, and heck,if you drive with the window down and have a sports exhaust , you can`td hear them anyway!

Not the ribs thats the problem, its the neck.

You will notice that a childs head is out of proportion to their body size. This is worse the small they are.

The seatbelts will easily stop an infant in standard form. In fact I am somewhat at odds with the philosphy of booster seats.

However forward facing children should have very good neck tone and power, or you are asking for damage.

Bolster cushion is a must until they are about 15kg as the book says.

I invested in some 'booster padding' (from the website) which is basically a cushion for junior to sit on and two pads which fit over the shoulder braces on the seat. All properly fitted of course as that's what they're designed for. Makes the seat a snugger fit for smaller babies.

Agree the bolster can look very ungainly at first, and yes it is tight on the seatbelt - but don't take a risk without it!

Not worried about its ungainly appearance, just its function.

Books all say the bolster helps in an accident, and are recommended, however the Cerb seating is unlike normal. Its tipped back enclosed and low down.

Bolster has two problems in my experience. One the child is safest lower down and the bolster props them up. The child seems safest when, in the event of an accident they don't make it into the driver area.

The bolster moves like a sled in an accident and the child slips down with consequent seatbelt damage to head and neck.

My youngster since the age of two went in the back with a seatbelt restraint, and no bolster.

We use the impact cushion with our littlie (almost 2), and he looked squashed when we first used it - he could barely see over the thing! But I don't think it's uncomfortable, he regularly falls asleep with his head on it - he always has.

I seem to recall the instructions for the seat say that the impact cushion should be used until age 3.

It's the big cushiony thing that goes on the baby's lap for protection. The belt slides through it and holds it in place.

I think they are a privately owned shop, so their advice will likely try to sell you something, but at least they are endorsed by the local council.

Am having real touble trying to find an official version.

In-Car Safety Centre in MK would not help us at all. We took the car in, plus kids and asked advice and all they did was bring out something unsuitable looked at it briefly and said they couldn't suggest anything. We'd used them before with our more 'conventional' cars and they seemed really knowledgeable, but no such luck with the Cerbera.

Just thought Id add to this post for anyone searching in the future.
I have the Recaro start, my son (15 months) is just heavy enough (9kg). I have the crash cushion too, it does look cruel and his head and arms just poke out over the top but he doesnt seem to mind it at all. He sleeps in it on long trips (and short ones) and when I put him in the esat he reaches for the cushion and pulls it towards him which im sure he wouldnt do if he didnt like it. He seems to like it almost as much as he likes the drivers seat!
Also just as a side note I did not end up getting the 'bar' fitted, spent ages trying to arrange it then fitted the seat without it and it seems fine. All in the Cerbera is a practical family saloon car, well until baby no.2 comes along.
If anyone wants to see a picture email me through my profile.
