Sat over lunch with a friend today at lunch and we had a good discussion:

Imagine if you could have an app or something similar on your phone that would look after your car maintenance or remind you when it's due/book it in for you, let you know when it would be a good time to swap your car, things like that - what would you like it to be able to do?

At the risk of playing Duncan Bannatyne, isn't it just the same as setting reminders on any calender based app? I don't see what a motoring app does differently, because it's still basically just a date reminder.

Sorry, im oot.

"swap my car"

?

Is this a "my car is 3 years old, time for a new one on finance" thing?

What you want is to manage it for other people who cant be arsed and have enough money to not worry about it, manage the servicing and if required MOT, the general top ups and maybe even valeting, if you need to take the car for a few hours for the Service/MOT turn up with a replacement the night before.

BMW's iDrive looks after servicing and MOT reminders, and I think I can handle the phone bit.

How would it know when is good time to trade in a car? Even I don't know when I'll suddenly decide.

The MOT place I use texts me every year to remind me it's due, so I don't even have to bother putting it on the calendar. Service it the week before, fix bits that have broken as and when they break. Without programming in the service schedule for every make and model of car ever, I don't think you could do much more than this?

What this is revealing is that there is almost nothing involved with running a modern car. Everything you could sensibly want would be

Tax (although now with direct debit less so).

MOT.

Service, except if your car is vaguely modern it has usage based servicing and will tell you in plenty of time so possibly not even this

Check your tyres/oil etc. This is practically useless as unless it tells you at a moment when it's convenient to do so then you'll forget, if you are the sort of person who needs an app to tell you to do it anyway.

Wash it/get it washed. You can tell that with your eyes, who needs their phone to tell them to wash their car?

What else is involved with running a modern car? I remember to put stuff on my roof seals now and again and things like that, but people who do stuff like this are in the minority.

You're trying to find demand for something where I don't think there is any. At best it might be a side function in a fuel economy app, for which there is a demand, and at worst you're trying to compete with the built in calendar and/or Microsoft Outlook.

Most garages/dealers use a DMS - dealership management system.

The most popular is Autoline rev 8.35. The latest is Autoline Drive.

A DMS does basically everything that you'd need to run a dealership including service and MOT reminders.

You can also run marketing campaigns from it.

Not sure why you'd want to be reminded when it's time to swap your car? Surely it's your choice when you fancy a change.

Make an app that you enter your finance details into, and it then tells you each month how much you've spent renting the car, and how many 10 year old 911s or M3s you could have purchased with that money hehe
