lens stinks of cigarettes

I have just purchased a pair of lens from ebay upon opening the boxes I was hit with the stench of stale cigarette smoke.I need to know the best method of getting rid of the aroma of minging ciggies.Most obvious answer would be a careful rub over with a wet wipe but best to ask first.

I'm sure it will pass with time if just left to air in a smoke free house but I had this with some luggage i bought once. I bought one of those poncy fragrance bags (lavender just for info) from Waitrose and just left it in the box the luggage came in.
Got rid of the smoke smell and the poncy lavender smell passed after a short while as well.

A quick google suggests ground coffee will absorb the scent. Put the lenses in a tupperware box with some? What's the worst that could happen?
