Discussion
Before you shout "Not another bloody what car thread" please consider that I genuinely need some opinions from perhaps those that have experience of these cars, heard things, read things, know things...and so on.
I am on the look out for an estate car and having looked at many, have compiled a final possibles list.
4,000 GBP, All estate cars, all diesel, all 100,000 miles or under.
’06 Volvo V70 D5
’06 Honda Accord 2.2 TD
’06 Jaguar X-Type 2.0 TD
’06 VW Passat 1.9 TD
’06 Saab 9-5 1.9 TD
’06 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI
’07 Saab 9-3 1.9 TD
’07 Toyota Avensis 2.2 D-4DT
’05 Merc C220 CDI
’09 Ford Mondeo 1.8 TDCI
Don’t want a Vectra, Astra, Focus, Cit C5, Pug 307 or 407, pre ’07 Mondeo, BMW, Megane, Octavia or MPV,
Thank you...

Out of interest, why not an Octavia?
I admit, it's my anti-Skoda prejudice. I'm sure they are great but despite it only being the family wagon, I still want something I like the look of and at least semi-enjoy being in and a Skoda just doesn't do it for me....(I know Mondeo is as boring but the '09 is nice looking)Last October (2013) I bought a saab 9-5 tid estate (56 plate 68K) for £3500 (private sale) so I'd expect to be able to do better now.
I had looked at the honda but found prices & mileages higher and lots of DMF/clutch problems.
Previously owned A4's and older V70. The Audis went through front suspension arms as service items which got tiring and expensive.
The saab has been fairly reliable - had a glitch with the DPF but I when halves with a friend and bought a genuine tech2 diagnostic system.

Out of that list, the Volvo will be the most spacious and most comfortable. Odd you don't want a Vectra but will accept a Saab 9-3.
I know what you saying, however the Saab is a nicer place to be than the Vectra, the seats are better for a start, even if the interior is a bit ropey in quality. Both creak like an old pirate ship though
Sept 13 I bought an 08 Saab 93 1.9tdi with about 78k on it.
I've since done about 850 miles a week in it and its just ticked onto 138k.
Its been serviced twice and had two new tyres, oh and two headlights.
Its returns 54mpg on the motorway at 75mph, my arse is kept warm by heated leather, the Bose stereo sounds good and its so so comfortable for the miles I'm doing. It drives alright too for a big diesel barge. Storage space is pretty large too if that's important.
I honestly can not recommend it enough. It's been faultless.
By a Saab.

AI was under the impression that Saabs actually shared very little with the GM car they were supposed to be based on.
The mechanics who work on mine said the (95 Vector Est Petrol) is basically a Vauxhall under the skin. Some challenges getting a few parts for it (the company supplying them isn't the most reliable, but if you can find the Vauxhall equivalent it's a doddle), but our 55 plate cost buttons four years ago and is still going strong.
