Help please,. My Vixen S2 has developed a very sloppy gearlever. No problems in changing gear but when in neutral there is 3 to 4 inches of sideways movement with no resistance at all. Has anyone got any idea what the problem is and and if so is it a gearbox out job or can it be rectified by removing the gearlever turret ?

It's still got the original gearbox which according to a number of websites is the type 3 in an S2.

If its the same as the type 5 that fits in the M there is fibre dome with a spring clip that locks it onto the gearstick base. These can crumble overr time which will leave the gearchange feeling sloppy.

Thanks Chris, my gearlever has a plastic dome at the bottom but it seems to be in good condition with no obvious signs of wear. Any more ideas why it feels so loose ?

i have never investigated where such sloppyness comes from, but your problem is well known to me.

the first thing when i purchase a ford-powered car with orignal gear selector: i replace it for a quick-shift lever:

result: sloopyness gone.

IF there is a plastic dome with a pivot through this dome, then lower on the lever a minor ball, THEN, there is a second bush that fits into the selector arm (several differing versions, OE, this needs the lever to be removed/plastic, these fit from the top/bronze for the race cars). I have the plastic fit from the top version.

Any ideas what grease/oil I can lubricate the gear lever with? (Just bought a quick shift) and finding reverse is a bit of a nightmare (I have to select 2nd and push down and forward to find reverse) No problems with the original, which was well lubricated so I'm assuming a little bit of grease is the right way forward?

hmmm...strange..i´ve installed plenty of such quick-shifts from different supliers, into cars with well used, up to freshly overhauled gearboxes....there was never an issue with reverse.

on the fork of the lever you can use whatever grease you find, even copper grease.

usually i always change, togehter with the gear selector, the plastic saddle which is clicked over the selector rod inside the gearbox.

be aware...there are lots of repros which do not last long.
