Site Management

Hi Guys

I have possibly got a chance of going into site management for a large housing development company.

I have experience with managing sites, but only on large extensions and renovation jobs on high end houses. Currently I'm managing jobs whilst still being on the tools. I manage from groundwork, to major demolition and brickwork through to finishings. With a very stringent builder.

I have never been on large development sites so I'm asking what is your daily routine Being a site manager on big sites. On a daily basis I'm managing upto 10 people from plumbers, electricians Plastrers and carpenters etc. My trade is brickwork but can do most things. I'm just trying to get an idea to compare my average day with a site manger on a large development.

Im a Site Manager for a large developer,

Main roles are ensure all paperwork is correct for the day (ie permits to work for s/c's and client),
health and safety on site,
inspections of work,
dealing with building control/client/architect inspections
ensure work being constructed is to latest drawings - ive lost count the number of times ive found people working to drawings that have been superseded
morning breifings (depending on how large your employer is)

i dont have much responsibility for labour - our s/c's manage their own guys. ive got on average 5 guys who deal with site traffic and odds and ends around site (ie, keeping on top of rubbish/handyman work) who ive got to put to work at the start of the day

if you have assistant site managers its making sure they are keeping their work areas up to date

Thanks for that Alex. If I get the job the job it will be a very big change for me. I just like to know some background about the job ready for interview.

Maybe I think and worry too much about changes as I've been with my current employer 10 years lol.

if you've already dealt with managing a small group of people then site management isnt too far away from that, the main thing is to keep on top of the paperwork. Most large developers/contractors require a large paper trail for most activities, all in the name of HS&E.
