Boring thread title, so congrats if you got this far....

Looking for something soft-roadish for the missus to replace her 07 Golf GT TDI. She likes the Touareg, but even she acknowledges its a bit on the big side (and the car is pretty big too!).

So, Tiguan was #2 choice. Drove an 09 2 litre diesel at the local VW dealer today, nice enough but not really floating my boat. Im suggesting afew alternatives, needs to be sub £12.5K, economical and less than 6 years old. Pref diesel manual, but not a deal breaker. Sub 70K miles please. Cash buyer.

My alternative pick is the Freelander 2.2 diesel, though not sure how borky they are at this age? Mrs D likes the look of them, but I don't wanna be taking flak for putting her in a lemon.

She fancies the Dodge Nitro, but its a 2.8 diesel and build quality will surely be on the ropey side?

Anything outside of the usual suspects (RAV4, CR-V, Quashqai etc) to consider?

Nissan Juke if you don't need vast interior space.

BMW X3 could be considered, no idea if that's a good idea or not for your budget.

We got a 61 plate yeti with 35k for under your budget. It's the 1.6 tdi greenline se and it's not as asthmatic is I'd feared!

Had a new Tiguan 170SE in 2008. Now have a 2012 140 SE DSG Yeti. Yeti is better in my view. The boot is smaller but the sporty drive is so much better

Yeti is a great shout, but I'd never get her into a Skoda! Shame really, as Im rather fond of them....

She's not sold on the looks of the Juke, again, I rather like them. I'd man up and put my foot down, but it'll be 'her car' really so may as well try and find a good compromise.

She does rather like the Volvo, but sure I read on this very forum that they're a bit borky?

Edit: X3 is within budget, but she feels they're a bit gopping around the age were looking at. I tend to agree...

My old man has an IX35, it's a great thing.

Unfortunately neither that or the Sportage will fly due to badge anxiety. Purely on the missus' part, you understand- I see these for the excellent value that they are.

Hate to just shoot stuff down, but to give some perspective, she would really like a Q5. Small wonder I haven't popped the question yet...

Guess she's still young enough to care about image, which admittedly narrows our options somewhat.

Most of the stuff that appeals is too thirsty, for example the Lexus RX.

Keep them coming please...

Ford kuga perhaps? The mrs has one and I actually enjoy driving the thing, huge lumps of torque and loads of gadgets in titanium spec. 40mpg no matter how you drive it too. We test drove pretty much all the small suv's before she settled on the kuga. Got it at 3 yrs old with 40k on the clock for 12k so well within your purchase criteria

Bad points- noisy tyres on 19inch wheels and a shyte turning circle but that's all I can criticise it on.

Mazda CX-5 it's the best looking soft roader IMO.

If not then a yeti would be next on my list

Or if they budget streches a Volvo XC60 the facelift one is much better looking than a x3 or Merc gla?

My wife had a 10 plate Tiguan, but a limited addition Summit model. It's very nice, with some unique touches. Only available in 2.0 auto though.

Nissan Qashqai? It's like a bigger, less ugly Juke.

Surely the Qashqai is comparable to the Tiguan, the Juke is comparable to a size 12 shoe.

Renault Captur, stylish, bigger than the Juke mentioned a few posts up, won't be stuck with 4x4 running costs but still looks chunky.

Personally I think you know what you are getting though; Tiguan, I have been selling cars long enough to know that when a couple enquire on a car and the woman; almost always the woman, mentions VW or Audi then 99% of the time that is where the money goes, it's always about image.

She won't touch a Yeti, Sportsge or IX35, it's all about image, sad really.

Mine actually wants an IX35 and she could have a GLA etc. She thinks it's a daft waste of money. Lucky me.
