In fact, this raises an intriguing question - would there be a net benefit if instead of burning cars on fields, car thieves parked them under speed cameras, and burnt them there?

Do you know for sure that it was deliberate? I've seen a set of black tyre marks approaching a speedcam on the A34 that cross over as they arc towards a pile of broken glass and plastic on the grass verge - "speed cameras kill".

Oh its most definitely deliberate - no skid marks or anything, the tread marks drive straight into it from across the road, right up the kerb, and right up the column!

No chance of it being an accident AFAIK.

Aye, but it's positioned after the junction, and may serve to divert drivers' attention away from more important matters, such as possible movements around the junction itself. On balance I think removal of the camera is probably an improvement.
