Sounds like mine is on the way out. Crunching noise when first trying to start the car, release, then it's ok second attempt.

I'm guessing it's just not engaging but is it worth doing a strip down and clean up, or is it best to replace?

Look in the equivalent parts wiki there are refurb kits available, much cheaper.

Stripped and clean mine and still going strong
And it's not gonna cost you anything if it doesn't work

No need to give your starter in exchange
They honour their warranty and are easygoing.
