What are these like on the motorway for fuel? I'm considering a manual car and most of them seem to be 2.2's.

Cheers

One of the blokes at work has ran one for a couple of years. His commute is mostly dual carriageway at a steady cruise and he claims to get over 40mpg for his working week. He's never mentioned having any problems with it and does his own maintenance on it.

Make of that what you will. smile

I can eek out 40mpg (if at 70 on the cruise control) on a 1.8 petrol (signum, but basically the same car). All round average about 35mpg. I'd imagine the 2.2 will be around 10-20% worse, given the extra 25% swept capacity

Watch for stretched timing chains. Its a common fault.

It manifests itself in the first instance as a engine management light on with an error code that usually translates to cam sensor failure - however there is no cam sensor on them.

It will get worse and is a £600+ job to resolve - assuming you fix it before it snaps the chain.

Thanks guys.

The gsi is a consideration as i can't see the mpg difference being that bad.

Not sure if Daemon is being sarcastic or not, but I have always loved the shape of the Vectra C.

40mpg+ is pretty good for an older generation petrol, especially give the low purchase price of these cars.

For ultimate reliability and slightly better economy though, I'd go for a second generation Avensis.

I don't mind it myself tbh, having had an automatic Elite hatchback before.

Just an FYI - The 2.2 petrol won't take E10 petrol, which might start appearing soon. Already on E5 in a lot of places. So unless you fancy sticking VPower / Ultimate in it.

The 1.8 VVT is a nice engine, I've got it in my Astra, and test drove a Vectra C with the same engine. My only gripe is the low gearing in the Astra, not the case in the Vectra. It's not as slow as you might think, and only 10bhp down on the 2.2

Of course the GSI would be awesome, get the man maths going..

Looking at the steering wheel and seats I find it hard to believe that GSI has only done 57k.

Also, 207bhp and 7.2s to 60mph from a 3.2... seems a tad disappointing?

How come the 2.2 can't take E10? Is that the direct and non direct?

Lol, not sure I can convince the gf that a v8 and v6 at the same time are a good idea hehe

If I was looking at a v6 seriously, it would probably be an ST220 Mondeo, but good ones are £2500 plus.

That GSi above is way past its timing belt unless it's been done.

Agreed. Look at the 0-60 of most modern cars and they aren't all that quick for the power. The ST220 is on paper slower than the GSi.

Yep. I know 0-60 isn't everything but I was just surprised given how big the engine is and juicy it will be to run.

I've driven a couple of Vectras and a Signum too.... They handled like fully loaded shopping trolleys, I don't know if the GSI version is any better?

I'm guessing the Mondeo would be a better all around car, bar the purchase price premium.

Depends what you are after, the Vectra is an excellent motorway / mile muncher. But there are other cars better suited to the twisties.

Perhaps if you can find one the 2.0T would be a good compromise biggrin

The E10 just seems to potentially be down to the direct injection.

see the end of that page for reference, believe its somewhere on Vauxhall website too.

I think the 0-60 actually conceals how slow it is for that big an engine. I absolutely spanked one on the motorway in a Volvo S60 T5 (2.3 250) and the 0-60 on that is only about 0.5 better

No, i'm a big fan of Vectras. Decent big cars and cheap as chips.

I sold a load of them when i was motor trading.

Rear suspension bushings go on them but thats about it really (on the petrol ones)
