This may be a typical cae of 'thinking' and 'knowing' someone has done somethign but not actually being able to prove it.

It may be fraud if he is lying to get money off you but I suspect the police will say its an employment/civil issue and not a crime. Though I suspect it probably will fall under fraud.

He's gained a pecuniary advantage by deceit, if you can prove it. That'd make it fraud.

Do you want your money back or just shot of him? That'll decide your next move.

Ask to see the death certificate, just for admin purposes of course....

Before you pay him any more money or allow him time off or whatever a death certificate 'for your record, to satisfy accountants' should be provided. If he can't provide then ask him for his months wages back, if he doesn't then involve the police.

I'd make sure you're *very* sure - i.e he hasn't had a terrible run of bad luck. In the circumstances asking for death certificate for admin purposes before offering another months pay.

If he's is telling lies then he'll either disappear or you can sack him - you don't have to give a reason.

I wouldn't bother chasing it any further, chalk it up to experience. The guy is obviously a bit sick and he will get his comeuppance. You're not going to get anything of value back.

If he's the conning bd OP thinks he is, he's probably got a fake death certificate lined up.

I wonder if there's any way to find out which other companies he's conning/conned and get them involved in outing him?

Take a photocopy of the certificate and call the registrar to confirm its authenticity.

Whilst it sucks, just sack him and chalk it up as bad luck.

Wasting your time on trying to get anything back/preventing employment in the future is just going to give you more aggrevation than it is worth.

Thanks for the comments so far guys.

Have spoken to my contacts and the police cannot and do not want to do anything.

I have found further information tonight that 100% confirms these lies.

The lies are also worse, and there is more that I cannot say atm.

I do not care about the money. I have to stop this individual and I have an idea.

Please keep the thoughts coming as they can influence my actions. I will post results of what I do.

This is all genuine and I thank you for all of your time so far. There really are some nasty individuals in this world. I am going to do all I can to stop this person. Surely I have a moral and corporate responsibility to do so.

Best.

Why not present him with your facts so far and tell him the police have your files and will be paying him a visit. Even though they're not.

If you can actually prove it, I would think one of the red tops would be very interested.

National newspaper exposure would fix him nicely

You need to be very thorough with this.

When he comes in on Monday, invite him into your office and explain you were worried about him so rang company X and they told you the story they told you.

You now need to know what's really going on so you can best help him settle back in to work after such a traumatic incident.

If you are right he will bluster and then walk out.

Good luck, it sounds like a really unpleasant thing to happen - be careful though, employees (and reports) can be very strange indeed - don't risk creating any issues for yourself between now and when he's gone, it's not worth it however you feel.

Concentrate on getting to the bottom of things (and getting rid of him). Make it someone else's police case.

You say you want to stop him - get him out of your company first.

Correct.

Part of the plan. I doubt a red top will give it the coverage. However, local rag will.

This then becomes searchable.

What many of you fail to realise is that the BiB will not and cannot do anything.

Ask your friends in the force.... a sad fact.

I have a responsibility to do something, whether it be corporate or socially.

And I will. It is too easy to write off... forget... let it be somebody elses problem. I will go as far as I can to expose and ruin this lie.

I saw the original post last night before its been deleted today. As someone with a little boy who's ill at the moment, I can't tell you how cross it made me to play this card... IF it is fake.

You've got to be so careful. If it is true, it could be one hell of a mistake.

Definitely ask for copy of the death certificate. However start the conversation with the suggestion that you wonder if the company insurance will provide a employee dependent death benefit. The incentive, pander to his self evident self greed. Finish with the request "they will of cause need a copy of the death certificate" and come across as you are on his side, ".. we play plenty for it about time they paid out" See what he comes up with.

Can you record it? Do you have CCTV or existing telephone call recording facility?

Talk directly to the Police fraud section.
