Moving house has turned out to be a bloody expensive process and as such when my current PCP ends the next car will be a fairly significant downgrade.

I'm considering a new Mini Hatch 3-door Cooper D (automatic) - I drive approximately 22k miles/year (mostly motorway to work and back) and plan to keep the car for up to 4 years.

Budget is up to £400/month, but closer to £350 would be ideal. My sticking point is having almost no deposit. I reckon it's going to be less than £2k and I've got no equity in my current car (plus will be hit with fees for damaged alloys).

Are there any options you would say are "must-have" on the Cooper? The John Cooper Works interior pack is an almost definite for me just to make it look a bit more interesting, plus parking sensors, heated seats and the folding/dimming mirrors.

Also what sort of discounts are available? I reckon my budget would stretch to a £23,000 car depending on GMFVs and interest rates, but not sure how achievable that is.

Bonus question: Any other similar cars I should consider?

I wouldn't be buying one without led headlamps, upgraded sound system and leather at a absolute minimum. Other wise the mini is just another hatch. Would suggest with a new house getting something cheaper like a focus.

Or of course a golf r is less than £300 a month

LED headlamps is a nice touch, actually. Not too worried about leather seats (have them at the moment and they're not all that). Is the basic sound system not great?

I'd imagine the Golf R would come out more expensive after adding a few luxuries and the fuel would offset any other savings.

Due to an increase in mileage (up from 15000 to around 25000) my r56 JCW is being replaced by a f56 cooper d. All being well I should be taking delivery prior to Christmas.

Mine is a pre-configured build slot with media xl, chilli pack, led headlights, upgraded wheels and heated windscreen as the main extras. I think it the list price is around £21k give or take. I've not gone pcp with this one, but I was offered with a £500 deposit a monthly of 360 over 4 years. So I'd imagine with around £2k £300 per month could be possible.

For me, the LED lights are a must. I've driven f56 with and without these and I found them to be one of the best options on the car.

HK hi-fi upgrade. While it is good and and improvement over the previous HK system, I couldn't justify the extra outlay. Given I mainly connect my iPod the bit rate of the tracks seems to have a greater effect on sound quality.

Leather seats I would like; my wife's 5dr has them and without a budget I'd tick that box, maybe look at the half leather option, it's the same seat design I think.

Dimming & folding mirrors I have a the moment but won't be on the f56 and will really miss them, the door mirrors More so that the interior mirror.

My dealer was keen to get the car delivered by the end of the quarter so might be worth getting in prior to Christmas or hanging on until the end of the next one.

Thanks Midget! What does Media XL add? In terms of music etc I'd just like the functionality to play music by Bluetooth from my phone - Is that part of Media XL or just part of the USB Bluetooth option thingy?

Out of interest, why the leather seats? I've not found them any better than cloth but wondering if I'm missing something.

I'm looking to change probably around March time to be honest so will try getting a decent deal then.

No problem, after spending far too long fixing down a spec for the wifes car most of this is stuck in my head.

I found the cloth/ leatherette seats too narrow for me ('powerfully built' is what I tell people) but oddly the cloth/leather & full leather seem fine. Partly is personal preference, all my previous have had 'lounge' leather or factory recaro seats, feel they make it a nicer place to sit given how much these cars can cost. Cloth/leather is what mine will have and the demo I tried with it was more than comfortable enough.

Media xl is navigation, mini connected things, Bluetooth for phone and music plus a few other gimmicks. Can get most of that without the nav by going with 'visual boost' I'm not sure what the media pack Bluetooth over basic but the visual boost screen gives you a more simplified idrive interface.

Cheers- Might have to go and sit in a few more to get a feel. We test-drove a Cooper a month or two ago and it had quite flat seats, but I don't think they were the 'sport' seats which would come with the JCW interior pack. At the time it was a car for the other half (low-spec, petrol, probably would go for the Mini One) but now it's for me it's... different.

Save your self a few ££ and go for a cooper not D my F56 owned since march gets about 47mpg on up and down country roads. On flat roads easily goes in to late 50's early 60's

Like every one has said LED are a must. I had a demo the other day with out them and the standard lights are awful.

The new sports seats are very comfy. I would say they give as much support as my old R56 JCW GP's recaros did

I would say if your getting Media XL get HUD to. I love mine.

This.
I see 45-47 When I use it from the OHs petrol cooper. the cooper d I demo'd for 24 hrs managed an indicated 63mpg over 90 miles of 60/40 motorway/town miles. Compared to my jcw either one is a good saving.

HUD is much more useful than expected it to be, given the imo still useless speedo. Also goes well with navigation.

Hmm. Running figures over 4 years.

88,0000 miles.
Diesel: £1.23/litre - 60mpg - £8200
Petrol: £1.20/litre - 50mpg - £9600

£1100 saving with diesel if I get those figures which is pretty much the difference in purchase price. Interesting. Might need to drive both back-to-back to decide.
