Taken from the Best PH Graduates car thread:

"Suprised to find so many students appearing out of the PH woodwork, is it time for a student PHers gathering (not a driveout though, can't keep up on my mountain bike!)"

Is anyone up for trying to organise this at some point! Sure it would be a good laugh!

Anyone??

Problem with students (or me anyway) is lack of time and money to get places!

how do you have the money to pay for and insure a car, as a student? genuine question....

As I'm doing my best to appear out of the woodwork I thought I may aswell reply to this one too.

I'm a lazy student too, and I'd love to say hello to you all.

That's about all I've got to say for now really. Is that enough? I do hope so.

Sam. You're in London! Come to the Wapping drinks in a few weeks. I'll drop you an email about it.

I do it by:

* Not drinking
* Having a part time job
* Living at home.

Living at home means I don't have to spend as much as others on rent (but still buy food for the house), I don't drink so when we go out I spend on average £5, a week spending money usually doesn't go past £20 and that includes a cinema trip at the weekend, pub on a Friday night and lunches throughout the week. Add another £10 for petrol for the week and in total I spend around £35p/w. I frequently buy CD's, but these are usally cheap, older CD's from "bargin bins". Similiar with DVD's.

I earn £45p/w in my part time job. During holidays I work extra hours (for instance over Christmas I've worked all the Bank Holidays) putting an extra £200 in my pocket - that'll pay for my Car Tax and for the CD's I bought over the festive period... I'm also trying to do 3 shifts each month as this is savings for my either insurance in October, future upgrades or holidays.

I use my loan, but most of it still exists in an ISA if the truth be told - it's all about planning for the future and knowing your limitations. Not drinking does help me immensely in keeping my monies high however!

edit:: And the choice of car makes a hell of a lot of difference as well, for instance I'm currently insured TPFT on the Marlin for £410 unlimited mileage. Thats on an 1.8 Roadster, which isn't bad considering. Yes I need to repair/upgrade it myself, but thats not a bad thing as I'm enjoying that part of it (it's hands on whereas my course is programming and stuff)

Back in my student days, it went like this:

1. Run a Mini
2. Work up a year or two's NCB before getting to university.
3. Insure it at the cheapest postcode (i.e. home or uni - it spends about 50/50 time at either location, so its fair enough)
4. Mend it yourself.

Easy!

For me it was working two full time jobs (hence finding PistonHeads ) during my gap year, student loan, working during uni holidays, a couple of maxxed out overdrafts, threatening letters from the bank that kind of thing.

I'm up in York (in North-East Cheshire in the holidays), which is miles from just about everywhere but full of great pubs. As for PHers, D_Mike is in my karting club, slash's_stingray lives at the end of my road, and I've been out for drinks with Bugmeister and Bob The Planner. Once.

I'd love to branch out and meet some more PHers, but I'm a bit remote and haven't got a car (though I will have in the summer with a bit of luck. Fiat X1/9 - buy at 21, 4 year's NCB by 25, Uno Turbo engine, gearbox and brakes some time during that time, sell for £4k when I've finished and get on that sports car ladder!)

Does NCB have to be in your own car? This is my fourth year of driving but I haven't been driving my car, but I've got a licence cleaner than royal cutlery and I've never made a claim.

If any PHers find themselves in York of a night, open a thread and I'll try and get down there.

Depends where and when really. I'd like to make it but I'm a bit tied up at the moment with this and that!

How do I afford my car? Bloody hard work! Worked HARD all year in my GAP year slaving my guts out as a working pupil for an event yard (horsey) getting paid very little (privilege was being there and getting the opportunities I had!) whilst having a Bar job working shifts to fit around the 12 horses I had to do every day - worked 7-2 three days a week bearing in mind I had to get up at 5 for the horses. My Dad pays my insurance though

Uni is like a big break! I never seem to do anything but do nothing...After that year it's greatly appreciated!

Yup - I'm game for a meet, later rather than sooner would be good. Don't get to start driving new car until March (need 4 years NCB).

Next term I have to attend a whole 3 lectures. Don't know if I'll QUITE manage it.
