Strange Plane??

Can anyone help identify a plane I saw today flying over Bury St Edmunds? I am 99% sure it's a USAF aircraft as I live not too far from the bases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath. The fuselage and the wings were about the same size. At the end of each wing was a rotating propeller. The tailplane was like that on a Lockheed Electra or A10 Warthog. It wasn't moving particularly fast and sounded a bit like a Chinook helicopter. I'm sure someone on here will know what it is.
