We have a new system at Edinburgh uni in which you have to display a scratchcard confirming that you have bought tickets in advance to park. If it is not displayed you get a fine even though we used electronic permits and still do. Barmy as.

I'm just wondering if this would be seen as a private parking fine ala parking eye? What do I need to check to make sure I can dinghy this!

All the best

Unless the ticket is issued by City of Edinburgh Council (on their behalf by a Parking Attendant) IT IS NOT A FINE. It is merely an invoice. And in Scotland, (providing the ticket is a PENALTY CHARGE NOTICE) there is no legal obligation to divulge the driver's name - who is the only person who can be taken to court. And if taken to court, the Parking Company can only clam losses. If there was just one - yes, 1 - empty space in the car park throughout your visit, then they can claim no loss.

Ignore any advice given to you regarding what happens in England - their laws are totally different.

Just watch if you're a student of the university as they may try to prevent you graduating if you have any outstanding fines.

But this is about a parking PENALTY CHARGE, NOT A FINE!

Universities routinely call penalty charges fines, in much the same way that libraries do (or did) and this is detailed in the agreements between students, staff and universities.

Any student who is eligible to graduate, but shows up on the university's system as a debtor, for any reason, including non-payment of penalty charges (aka fines), may be denied graduation until the debt is cleared.

I am a thirty year fugitive from university justice. Directing a play, I received a summons to appear before the Proctors in full academic dress to answer for the heinous crime of sticking posters up on shop walls. I did not go. I may have been sentenced in absentia, but no one tugged my gown when many years later I could finally be arsed to go and collect my degrees. You'll never take me alive, university cozzers!

Probably would have got a longer sentence if you'd attended and worn your sword on the wrong side.

Cakes and ale, anybody ?
