If you plan a trip to anywhere in the UK that needs a ferry to get to and return to the mainland, then your insurance policy will not cover the cost of bringing your car back on that ferry.

Seems unbelievable, but I promise it's true. An owner of a classic car broke down on the Isle of Wight and found that his policy did not cover the ferry costs, which were more than normal as of course his car was on a transporter lorry. When I heard of this, I asked my own insurer and to my surprise was told that this was the case in my policy and that this was normal practice for all polices for car cover in the UK.

Worse, they said that it wasn't possible to buy extra cover, if you planned a trip to the Isles of Wight, Man, a Scottish isle or Northern Ireland. "There are no facilities", they said.

So, be warned, if you breakdown anywhere off the mainland of the UK, you can expect a hefty bill for carrying your car back home, that your insurer will not cover.

I live on the Isle of Wight, and I am not suprised they refuse to pay the ferry costs, they're a fking joke.

Thankfully I don't think that rule applies for us Islanders!

I take it you're talking about breakdown cover, not car insurance.
I've always been aware that breakdown cover was for mainland only, it says so on my paperwork. I would expect to have to pay to get my car back to the mainland and for them to recover it from there.

Your car broke down, why would subsequent recovery costs be covered under your motor insurance?
If you had a accident, that would be a different story.

That may be the case for yours, but others may well differ.

My insurer doesn't cover the costs of bringing my broken-down car from the other side of the road, let alone water. But my breakdown cover would cover the costs of bringing my broken-down car from North Africa back to the UK (with a caveat of the value of the vehicle).

Maybe the OP has 'free' recovery included in his car insurance?

My RAC break down cover provided by my bank covers me for being in Europe.

Maybe he does. And it's worth every penny, by the sound of it.
