Someone in the office had a bump yesterday and asked our opinion.

so, in theory:

Say I'd had an extremely minor fender bender and with no visible damage.

If one were waiting on the other party to let them know if they were going to claim on insurance, what would be a time limit on such a thing?

Also,
Would one have to tell your insurance company to 'let them know'? Now I know by the book that's a yes. But since insurance companies hike your premium for a simply 'by the way guys, no claim but...' That makes it a bit of a quandary.

For property damage, 6 years I think. 3 years for injury.

if your insurer tells you that you need to notify them within x number of day, if you don't do it, then turn around and say actually i want to claim (for your own damages) they may well be in there rights to refuse, they can't refuse a genuine claim to a 3rd party for such a reason though.

So again, in theory. If you were certain you weren't going to claim. You could wait until hearing from the 3rd party before notifying them?

i would absolutely
but i wouldn't say it's the right thing to do

I really think insurance companies are an absolute pain the way they are so woolly on many terms and essentially end up penalising those who are the most and the least compliant with everyone else being somewhere in the middle.

Due to risk of PI claim(s), I'd be notifying my insurer of this incident "for information only at the moment" - even if I was the innocent party wink .
