I'm looking at buying a BMW soon but one of the prospective cars has awful 20 inch aftermarket alloys, its a good looking car, good price, right spec and reasonable miles. But should the fact it has aftermarket alloys and an aftermarket 'M' badge on the front grille put me off?

Would anyone be the same??

Short answer? - yes.

Indicative of a clueless owner, plenty more cars out there.

Go and have a look at it then. If it's in good nick and been looked after it will be apparent very quickly, chavvy wheels or not. Does he have the originals? If so then that's a good sign as it perhaps points more to an enthusiast.

But rule of thumb for me is naff aftermarket wheels/mods are at the very least a "buyer beware" signal.

Nothing looking at the photos, no 'lexus lights' in sight. just terrible wheels and an M badge on the grille.

Hmm I feel the same, hence the thread tongue out i'm going to see it this weekend. Another that worries me is that its just been reduced. A sign people are going to see it and walking away?

Reducing the price 2 weeks before Christmas is a sign that nobody buys cars 2 weeks before Christmas.

Wife's 2001 Mini has weird chavy, led rear lights, which nearly put me off when we went to look at it, along with the st tyre brands of 3 different types.

I checked everything else VERY carefully. We bought it, and the rear lights have grown on me, and it now has 2 matching tyres on each axle. I'd prefer 4 matching tyres, but hey.

personally I'd leave it 20'' wheels affect/wear brakes, clutch, wheel bearings and wishbone/suspension bushes, and more even if they haven't seemed to affect it the parts are stiil going to be more worn then a similar car that never had 20's IMO

I was thinking more about:

- poor maintenance
- dodgy maps
- blown speakers
- general thrashing
- and poor maintenance

They'd put me off

Toe eye missing
Horrible 20" rims with low profile tyres
Purposely misbadged cars, you can just tell.

More importantly someone mentioned, has the owner still got the original rims? Is yes then that could be a good sign.
