The new 15 registration plates have been released and one combination effectively spells my entire name out which I'm keen to get my paws on. I don't plan to own a 15 plate car for some years to come, so for now the plate will have to be retained.

My name is not exactly a common one, yet the plate's price on tbe DVLA site is £999 as opposed to the more usual £399. Is the price likely to change by March next year once the plates start being assigned? Or would one of the many online brokers be able to sell this for less, and if so, when are they likely to begin selling 15 plates?

Brokers sell at the DVLA price plus their commission. They won't sell it to you cheaper.

The DVLA price is the price. Highly unlikely it will go down, if a lot of people search their site for the plate the price may go up.

If the plate is available now but is an otherwise-normal sequence it could end up lost forever if it goes into the regular allocation of numbers (unless you can find the physical car and buy it that way).

I wanted to buy my postcode when the 13s came out, but SWMBO over-ruled me.

"Evis" might not be a common name, but think electric vehicle or just plain ol' initials. 15 is going to be a set of plates they'll ramp, because "is".

It will never be cheaper than now (unless someone sells for a loss in future).

My other half got about 5 or 6 brokers emails (or snail mails) about a plate that would be suitable for her prices ranging from 500 to 900 plus assignment fee - she liked the plate so I looked on the DVLA web site and it was £399 (inc assignment fee £80)

So we bought it direct.

Don't forget the retention cost if you don't have a car to put it on.

Unlikely to drop. Much more likely to be sold if/when someone else spots it.
If it is your perfect plate just get it - if one of the reg companies spots it and buys it, it will cost you a lot more at a later date.

Keeping it on retention is covered for the first year after purchase from the dvla, then £25/year after that. Can pay to retain up to three years in advance to save sending off the paperwork every year.

if you do buy it... make sure you renew the retention on it on time... they are not at all lenient if it runs out.

Thanks for all the replies chaps. Looks like I best cough up now as a present to myself for sometime in the year 2020 haha!

One other question, I have two good options, one keeps the legal format, the other would benefit from a change in spacing and is then absolutely perfect (i.e group everything together and space the last letter on its own). I know the latter isn't legal, but what are the chances of getting pulled up on this AND being forced to change it back to the legal format?

I can't justify purchasing both plates atm frown.

There is a chance you will be pulled, once you have been that is on record and if you get pulled again the DVLA can 'confiscate' the number.

It makes you a candidate for the bad plates thread. Like me then! hehe

I have mine spaced similarly (A<space>A05AAA) and a spare pair of legal ones in the spare wheel well. I also have quick release plate holders too.

I've been running it for 18 months like this and been followed a few times with no issues. ANPR at car parks and petrol stations get me ok. I have not changed the font at all. So I would say it'll be fine

Why would you want your name on a plate??

I bought a plate like this when I was 19, by the age of 21 I realised how embarrassing it was and left it on the car I sold. Plus if you ever do anything wrong whilst driving or ever get spotted parked up at a strip club, everyone in your town is going to know who it is!!

I would be able to remember it.
My neighbours would recognise it.
My name isn't a realistic option for a plate.
It's better/more meaningful/funnier/cleverer (is that a word?) than a LOT of the plates I see.
