I am in a bit of a bind after checking my oil at lunchtime. I won't have time to get any 10w-40 fully synth before going to Goodwood for the PH event this weekend.

That leaves me two choices and in all honesty I am unsure how best to proceed.

I either top up with a litre of part synth 10w-40 or I use fully synth 5w-40. The manufacturer says to use 5w-40 anyway, but an engine builder/tuner advises using 10w-40.

I'm currently minded to throw in a litre of the 5w-40 fully synth but wanted to check I am doing the right thing. Anybody able to advise?

I doubt either would make much difference to be honest, but I would go with the 5w40. Only for the reason that I feel like fully synth will mix better. I have no evidence at all for this.

I feel the same in all honesty.

If the manufacturer says to use 5w-40, I'd chuck a litre of that in.

I've often had to top up our cars with a glug of 'wrong oil' that I happen to have in the garage - not ideal but I figure better than running too low. I always oil change more frequently than the book anyway and none of the cars have suffered any ill effects.

A combination of 3 different supermarket oils will be better than 'not enough oil' .

Your overthinking it.

Any oil is better than no oil.
Just plan for an Oil Change a bit sooner.

OEMs do validation testing, engine builders don't.

fks sake, this is about as interesting as 'what butter shall I put on my toast'
It's not going to matter, to me, you, the car or anyone reading this, just chuck some in and get on with it.

5w40 is a bit thinner than 10w40 at cold temperatures.
Full synth will take high temperatures better and last longer than semi-synth.

Given that we're at the start of winter, and not terribly warm at the mo - and that you're going to be tracking it in a couple of days, it seems to me that both of those differences point to lobbing the full synth 5w40 in.

Well, you could use either real butter or synthetic. The synthetic will be more spreadable at lower temperatures so for that reason I'd advise the synthetic.

I'm not sure your engine is particularly bothered about the flavour of the oil.
