After the wisdom of PH...

Diesel Land Rover Defender (Diesel)

Always filed up at the local Texaco, with receipts. The car is just 3 years old, and was serviced 2 weeks ago. Due to the relative low mileage (12k in 3 years) it hasn't been filled up since it was serviced. At the end of last week it just stopped. Wouldn't restart for 20 mins. Then was fine for 12 miles where it stalled again. This time restated straight away. Over the next week it stalled a few times, and always restarted so booked out into the dealer and took it there today. Their initial diagnosis was crank sensor, but on investigation have advised that the fuel filter is clogged with what appears to be sand. They tell me the fuel line to the filter is also full of this grit.
I have asked the garage to keep the fuel filter and the remaining half tank of diesel.
The garage has said they will clean the tank and fuel line and put in a new filter.
I'll speak to the garage concerned, but realistically is this something I can pursue a claim for?
How common is fuel contamination?
I only ask as we have 3 diesel cars that we fuel there...

Sounds more like you've upset somebody & they've had a go at your car.

I suppose which ever way you go about it it will be hard to prove how it's got there.

A claim against who?

What's your proof?

Presumably the same garage that serviced the car before it stopped also did the investigation work?

I would imagine that any contaminated fuel from a petrol station will also see multiple cars affected. If yours is the only one it doesn't sound very likely that it was contaminated at the station.

Have any of the other diesel cars you fuel there given trouble?
