I had the engine light on our 3.2S so took it to my trusty mechanic and told him the engine codes point to the MAF sensor. He brought the car round to me after having cleaned the sensor and asked me to take it for a spin. I got in and started it up only to be surprised by a very loud engine behind me, he had removed the top cover/parcel shelf and left it off. I can't believe how ear splittingly noisey the engine is at 6 - 7k revs when it's just behind your ears!! The induction sound was quite nice too. I was tempted to leave the cover off for the sound but feel I may be deafened after a few miles hehe

It must be similar to how a LeMans or GT car might be in race trim - wow.

I know, cool story etc....

I experienced this once at a Track Day in Bedford in about 2002 - chap there had taken his cover off his Boxster - It was ok for about a minute - but after that it was just too loud.

Brilliant Roadster the Boxster but much better with the engine cover on. smile

Quite like the sound of that - can it cause any damage if left off?

Why not just take the sound deadening carpeted piece and any rear speaker or box out. That sounds like a better half way house.

If you just want more noise then do the de-snorkel mod.

Been there done that, heard the hydraulic tappets like ball bearings in an old can and heard the induction 'whooses' which sounded rather too much like flushing the toilet on an Intercity 125 for my taste biggrin

I even tried a short drive with the front engine cover off when in the process of diagnosing a power steering noise and then again with the cover back on but the foam backed carpet still off. It's remarkable how effective all that sound deadening is.

P.S. not my car.

P.P.S. Us LHD Boxster drivers enjoy marginally louder induction noise as we sit on the left hand side!
