New speed cameras are to be installed on four roads in and around Bristol in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents at notorious blackspots. Within the next three months, speed traps will go up in Hotwell Road in Hotwells, on the A369 in Abbots Leigh, and the B3355 Silver Street in Norton Radstock.
A fourth roadside camera will also be positioned on the A303 in Buckland St Mary, near Illminster.
The announcement is likely to anger anti-speed camera campaigners who have called for the majority of speed traps to be scrapped, claiming they are nothing more than money-making devices.
Once the new traps are up and working, it will bring the total number of fixed cameras covering roads in the Avon and Somerset police force area to 71.
Safety Camera Partnership officials claim the latest statistics show that the number of deaths and injuries on the streets of Bristol and its outskirts have been dramatically reduced in the last two years.
Casualties on routes covered by cameras have fallen by more than 16 per cent, from 1,824 to 1,520, when compared to the average for the three years before the partnership began its operations.
In the past three years, there have been 18 accidents resulting in injuries - three of them serious - in Hotwell Road in Hotwells.
On the A369 in Abbots Leigh, there were six serious accidents in the same time, while there were 14 accidents which caused injuries - three of them seriously - on the B3355 in Norton Radstock.
There were 15 accidents which resulted in injuries on the A303 in Buckland St Mary.
If caught speeding, the law currently states that drivers face a £60 fine, with their licences endorsed with three penalty points, up to a maximum of 12 points.
An average of 130 people are still injured on roads in the former county of Avon and Somerset each week.
The latest figures show there were 66 deaths on roads in Avon and Somerset between April 1, 2003, and March 3, 2004 - 22 less than in the previous 12 months.
The total number of injuries in road crashes also fell - down to 6,839 compared with 6,928 in 2002/3.
In the 12 months before the Safety Camera Partnership was launched in April 2002, there were 103 road deaths and 7,226 injuries.
Partnership manager Dick Bowen said: "Our only aim in installing these new cameras is to reduce casualties on our roads and help to create safer communities for residents and particularly the vulnerable, including the young and elderly.
"We monitor the accident statistics on all routes within the partnership area continuously.
"When there is a rise in accidents, a number of options are considered to encourage motorists to keep to the legal speed limit imposed by the local highway authority, including more prominent warning signs, road engineering solutions or, as a last resort, camera enforcement.
"Where accident rates fall, we suspend camera operations."
The partnership has also installed two more new "red light" cameras at traffic lights in South Gloucestershire - both on the A4018 Merlin Road at junction 17 of the M5 at Cribbs Causeway. They are set off when a driver jumps a red light.
As well as fixed cameras, mobile camera crews also monitor traffic at 183 other locations which have high accident records.
l Motorists can sign up to have the daily locations of mobile cameras emailed to them by logging on to www.safecam.org.uk . The locations are also listed in the Evening Post every day.

Surely if the scamera partnerships really do believe that their scameras reduce accidents, and any reduction in accidents would be attributed by them to the scamera. Then why the hell would they consider removing it afterwards? It's like saying "We believe it works, the figures show it does work, so we are now taking it down". Plus if the rate went up again when removed, wouldnt they be wide open to having action taken against them by the bereaved? It sounds potty to me. Or are they eager to be able to say at some time in the future "We told you so".
