I have just sold a car on sale or return with a dealer. I gave the dealer a minimum price that I wanted for the car and we agreed that his share would be 10%.

One of the junior sales staff called me after a while to tell me the car had sold. When I asked what price was achieved, he said "I'm not sure as I didn't handle the sale but I think it was X." I then spoke to the service manager about a separate matter. He commented that it was good news the other car had sold. I asked if he knew what price had been achieved and he told me he wasn't sure but thought it was Y. Finally, I popped round and had a chat with the dealer principle who tells me he got Z for it.

At the end of the day, I got my minimum reserve, but the constantly shifting nature of the price info I was being given has left me uneasy. Can I find out what price was really achieved? If I ask to see a sales invoice, obviously they can just create something. So that doesn't really help me.

Do I just have to take it on trust?

Pretty much.

Depending on the nature of the sale, the dealer could play around with added extras / the buyers px to effectively show the value of 'your' car in the way they want to.

You used SOR for the convenience, you must know the market well enough re your minimum price - which you got, so if it were me I'd cash the cheque and move on (having first told the DP I've heard various different sales prices, just to see if he/she gets a bit squirmy hehe).

I think this has been covered here before, but essentially, if you got your price that you agreed, that's it. Simple.

Ok, makes sense. Thanks

It does somewhat make a mockery of the 10% cut though as it is impossible to ascertain the true price realised.

"....of final customer invoice."

It's vital to make that clear when the deal is struck.

Not really, 2 sources of info are sketchy at best. a Junior salesman who wasnt actually involved in the deal and a service manager, neither of whom I would think are an accurate source (why would a service manager either be involved or be made party to sales information). At best they will be making an estimate of what they think it sold for.
