Looking for 981 Cayman S Sapphire blue PDK etc etc
Discussion
Hi all
Just an on the off chance post really.
I am going to be on the hunt for a Sapphire Blue 981 Cayman S over the next few weeks/months. Spec wise I am going to be looking for one with PDK, Sport Chrono, PASM, sport exhaust or at least that is my initial thoughts.
i have an appointment with my local dealer to discuss and try out a couple of theirs to see what I really want to have if possible.
I realise that a) there aren't that many out there yet b) looking for a specific colour and spec set will reduce the chance of finding what I am looking for but I thought I would see if anyone is thinking of moving theirs on over the coming months. As they say if you don't ask you don't get.
Before this descends into a you should get a manual etc type thread I am sure I would enjoy one a bit more but some compromises have to be made in order for the keeper of the purse strings to loosen them a little.

Sports Exhaust might be the most difficult of those options to find. Sapphire Blue is fairly common and PDK should be no problem
Might be worth looking at ex demo GTS models as well. Get all the spec you're looking for.
Would a 981 Boxster meet your needs? Thet look rather stunning in the bright blue
Best of luck

Boxter is a possible, purse strings keeper is going to the dealers with me tomorrow so that we can have a good evaluation of the various things.
All the Sapphire ones I've located to date have a fairly limited spec so I really want to find out how much difference the various bits make so that I can decide how important they really are.
A GTS would be ideal but really want to limit the spend to the low £50Ks at most so don't think they are going to come in on budget.
Having got rid of the Vantage S the money is there waiting for the right car and if I can find that for around the £50K mark it lets me take a chunk off the mortgage aswell.

Sorry, but this always intrigues me. You want a nearly new car with a very specific spec etc etc.
Your needs are so immovable how do you expect to find this car?
As you are so close to a new car, price wise, why not just order new and get your ideal?
Simple answer, I want to try to get the best value for my money.Your needs are so immovable how do you expect to find this car?

As I said earlier I am going to see tomorrow how immovable my needs are, it may well be that what I think I want will get thrown out of the window at that point.
There are a lot of people out there who want to have the latest version of something/anything whether it be a TV or a Cayman. So I don't seem the harm in trying to find someone who is going to be updating their Cayman and trying to do a deal with them that will see more money in their pocket for their next deal and more left in my pocket as well.
It may not work out in which case I will re appraise my options but as I am in no hurry I will see what happens.

A Vantage S .. that's an great car. My better half has a V8 Vantage (2006 model), it's not as quick or nimble as my Cayman, but it is very special
Couldn't agree more unfortunately I could not come to an agreement with the dealer about rectification of what I felt was a problem. To their credit they gave me a full refund which means I am now trying to decide what to go for next, another Vantage or as you say try something that is more nimble. Over the years I have had various TVRs which have given me plenty of seat of the pants enjoyment but these days I fancy something a little less raw but none the less capable. I think the Cayman in S or GTS form will allow me to have the GT car for our European trips at the same time as something that I can enjoy on those early morning drives you take just for the sake of it.J12KJR said:

I did much the same - sure you may not everything you'd like, and you may (effectively) pay for a few things you are not fussed about. But I got a practically new (720 miles on the clock) car for a lot less than a new one of the spec I wanted. I would have liked a couple of things (a different colour for example) - but they weren't deal breakers for me. I don't see why you couldn't do the same - if you are a bit flexible and especially if you can accept something with a few more miles on the clock. As I said earlier I am going to see tomorrow how immovable my needs are, it may well be that what I think I want will get thrown out of the window at that point.

Miles on the clock doesn't worry me at all, have to be honest and while it sounds like I am being a tart I really do want to try to get a Sapphire blue one just love the way it looks. So for those that have dealt with the dealers what sort of discount can the dealers be pushed to on cars they have in stock?
Is this a good time of year to try for a deal or am I likely to do better in a couple of months?

Didn't have much success pushing dealers on price - but then I didn't try on ones that looked expensive. I got a couple of freebies (including a Porsche Experience) The one I did buy was about £5k less than typical prices - to the point where I thought that there must be something wrong with it (crash repaired or something) but I was assured not, and I am sure that is true. However mine was sold under the "second hand margin scheme" whatever that may mean. The car was bought by a lady who couldn't wait for the spec she wanted and bought the one in the showroom , knowing she would return it when hers came in (as you do!).So for those that have dealt with the dealers what sort of discount can the dealers be pushed to on cars they have in stock?

Not sure how common that is -but I saw two which looked very cheap when I was looking, the first was sold before I had chance to see it, the second I bought.
All that said I would certainly wait until the New Year unless a real bargain turns up, prices are bound to ease a bit then.
Kev,
Go order a GTS in Sapphire blue, I did, best decision I ever made. It will be amazing Trust me.... I even opted for the PDK also, X73 and Black pack (wheels and trim). Or If your budget is tight you don't need to option it and you will get just as good as a S. I optioned mine out to the perfect car I wanted.
The Blue looks amazing in different lights - stop waiting and go forth and buy
Merry Xmas.

Hi All
Just thought I would pop this back up to the top in case anyone is thinking of doing a deal on a new car in the near future. I'm still on the hunt for a well specced "S" in Sapphire Blue.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
Kev
I saw a standard Cayman in Hatfield last week which matches most of your spec I believe. Having driven the 2.7, It's pretty much just as quick and fun on the public road, so unless you are 100% set on the S, I'd say give it a go. Thanks Newbieninja, i may have to get a drive in a 2.7 to see what they are like, still trying to work a way of getting into an S or GTS if i can.
How is your good lady's arm healing? and have you got sorted after your problem with the cyclist?
She's doing very well thanks. Being off the bike for a few weeks over christmas is sure to help her recover nicely. How is your good lady's arm healing? and have you got sorted after your problem with the cyclist?
The car...will be sorted in due course too. Just waiting on the insurance companies dragging their feet.
Looking closer at that spec, it seems good value especially considering any discount you might get on it. I had a 2.7 for a bit...really can't notice a difference around town/normal driving between that and the GTS. Let me know what you think once you've had a go!
Merry Christmas!

How much difference is there in spirited driving would you say? especially overtaking ability. The car...will be sorted in due course too. Just waiting on the insurance companies dragging their feet.

After the TVRs especially the Sagaris the Vantages were good but didn't seem to make the overtakes of the 45mph brigade as cleanly. The S and the GTS felt better around that area but seemed to lose out accelerating at the sort of speeds that would have you giving up your licence on a private road obviously.
Lovely decisions to have to make though

Bury your right foot in the carpet, let pdk do it's magic and you find yourself in triple digits on private roads in no time
The gearing is pretty long though, so you'll really be working the engine up into screaming revs territory for clean overtakes.
I've been passenger in a Chimaera, and yes, it accelerates like mad when you drop a cog for the overtake, but the base cayman has a sense of refinement that you just won't get with a TVR.
If you want mad overtakes, get a motorcycle

The answer is inevitably very subjective and depends on what else you have driven. All model have high gearing. The 2.7 has the same gearing as the 3.4 (PDK or Manual) so the lack of torque is noticeable. PDK gearing (on the latest models - but I'm not sure on all) is much more sensible (lower) than manual - the extra gear means cruising is more relaxed too. After the TVRs especially the Sagaris the Vantages were good but didn't seem to make the overtakes of the 45mph brigade as cleanly. I would say that a 2.7 when revved is a very rewarding and quick car (up with the quickest hot hatches). The 3.4 is more effortlessly quick and is a genuinely fast car when revved. I'd say the 2.7 is a sweeter engine - and some would definitely say that the 3.4 is more of a license loser. I went for the 3.4 for its midrange grunt - but I wouldn't gainsay anyone who preferred the 2.7.

My years on a motorcycle are well behind me, great times but not anymore. Having been used to the 4L straight six and large V8s in lightweight TVRs I think that I might feel a bit let down by the 2.7 even with the PDK but we will see.
