Was going to take off my strut brace today but am i correct in thinking you have to drop the spring/damper unit to get to the bolts as the gap was tiny and no way could i get to the bolts

Also do the VXR8's actually need a strut brace? as i don't do track days etc

I don't remember my VXR8 having one. My Monaro did, but not the VXR8. I expect you could live without it.

In theory, tying the tops of the towers together is good, but you have to tie them in with the other corners. Strut braces are really for show, unless triangulated with a full cage.

Not many cars have them, but I assure you you will notice the difference if you remove it. The older and more floppy the car the bigger the difference.

I have an old 635 and fitted one. Best mod I ever did. Turn in was better, car was more stable in low speed corners and tyre wear became more even.

Under load in corners your suspension turret is under a lot of force. That force is going upwards and it will move a little. Chassi flex. The strut brace ties it into the other strut preventing this. I reckon on my 635 the movement was as much as half an inch and no it's not rust related. I've heard from a friend who owned a lotus cortina when they were new that he lost his front windscreen due to chassi flex in a hairpin bend.

Food for thought I hope

Chassis design has advanced quite a bit since them days though, took it off and didn't notice any difference but still need to know if I'm correct in saying you need to drop the spring/damper to get the mounting brackets off?

I put the MF one on and used a bent 13 mm spanner if that helps
