I've got about £10/15k to spend on a fast family saloon (not A6 barge size). I don't want a German badge, or a derv. would like MPG to in the 30s. Must be four doors. Any suggestions.

Legacy or Mazda 6 MPS, or some sort of Impreza/Evo.

If you're content with something a few years old, the lower purchase price will offset the low/mod 20s MPG.

Yep, an IS-F would be good. Budget though?

Evo or impreza. Doubt you'll get 30mpg mind.

ETA - I wouldn't say it is the jap equivalent of an s4 but a civic type r fd2 is a fast good handling 4 door saloon, good residuals too.

Mitsubishi Galant VR4 has to be the closest thing to an S4, one of those and a bootful of money to pay for extra fuel/servicing/etc?

Where can you get an FD2, and are do the sell for about the same as a FN2.
That Lexus is nice, but cheapest on Autotrader is £24k.
Like the VR4 curve ball.
Jag XF - bit to bragey.
Not to keen on the Evo/Impreza scene.

What's your budget?

FD2 Civics sell for about £10k-£15k. They were only available as a grey import so quite rare on the second hand market.

Check out the Mazda 6 MPS as already mentioned. 2.3l turbo and AWD. It's like a more mature Impreza/ Evo.

4th-gen Legacy GT?

Or maybe the later 3.6 flat-6 version.

What does 'bragey' mean?

Would a Legacy be bragey then? I can't see how an S4 isn't bragey.

In my mind a Barge would be Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, or similar. Legacy would be fine.

Legacy 3.0 would do it - and it doesn't fit into the Evo/Scooby scene either.
You'll struggle to pay more than 8 grand for one though. There is a jap-market only 2.0 turbo that looks interesting - and tuneable.
Legnum/Galant is 280bhp of awesome, but old now, and sub-20 mpg can be painful.
Nissan Stagea is leftfield if you can find one.

Or go with the swedes - a V70 AWD with all the bells and whistles and (I think) 300 bhp would do the job very well.

Isn't the Legacy A6/5 series sized?

Only thing that comes to mind other than the IS-F http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/i...

Probably not many around though, unless looking at the import sister 370GTs.

Finding a fast Legacy would probably be as difficult, I could only find a handful and all are 03-07 or so and well under the budget (again there's imports as they still sold a 2.0 300bhp model in Japan until then end of 5th gen this year).

How about a R34 Nissan Skyline GT four door ? http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-cars-sale-pr...

or a Stagea ? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/n...

Both Jap, Both 4 door, both can return 30(or as near as makes no difference)mpg.
Reliable as long as you let them heat up and cool down properly a and with regular servicing, which is a doddle on these.
Oh an they can get a shift on.

Obviously not, but his OP only said no Germans so I thought it was worth a mention as he might have forgotten about them.

He's also now said he doesn't like the Impreza or Evo which rules out the obvious small fast saloon options.
