L322 FF Range Rover or XF?
Discussion
I have always wanted a Range Rover and I would happily have any model from the brand new ones to a Classic. Practicalities come into play, I am actually thinking of a main car, so probably something older is not a good idea.
I also like the XF, and would quite happily have an estate version or a saloon.
I don't have a need for a specific kind of car other than 4 doors and a decent boot.
A max of 40 to spend.
There are some very nice late model FFRRs for sale in that price bracket. I'd rather buy a car that is in production but I just like the late model L322. I'm not really a fan of the last model RRS.
I could get a newer XF with a good spec for the same money. A car still in production for now anyway.
I'd be looking for I guess approved used though I'd not turn down a new Jag if there were incentives etc.
My current car, a Freelander has done 17.000 miles in 2 years, but it is set to be even less in future. Great little car, and that's the problem, it is just a touch too small. A petrol would be no problem for a car that will probably cover 6k a year.
I know there is a new Disco Sport coming, but after a nightmare years ago with one of the first Volvo 440 Turbos brought into the UK, I'm never going to buy a just launched car again.
I don't have a need for either car. This is more a want.
So what would you go for. XF or L322 FFRR?

Seems clear enough which you should get.Having spent plenty of time in both, I am not a fan of the XF's interior, and you can't beat the driving position in the Rangey...
FFRR 4.4 TDV8. One of our customers has one after having two supercharged ones, he couldn't be happier with it just as quick as the supercharged but with at least half the fuel costs. The later XF S diesel is a nice car to be in and drive but you just can't beat the feeling of driving a full fat Range Rover.

Yep. I've had a 4.2 s/c range rover, the Mrs currently had a 5.0 s/c RR and I've now got a 4.4tdv8. The derv is slower than the 5.0 car but it's not a massive margin and certainly far closer than the headline bhp figures might suggest. Given the derv literally uses half the fuel as well... I'd got for the RR too. Had a 2006 one in the past. 3.6TDV8 but had the bluefin chip as well. Absolutely loved it.
Just had a quick poke around on Autotrader and for your budget, it looks like you can get a 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE or Autobiography. In this weather, with winter tyres, it'll be a true go anywhere vehicle. Also, as the cold and snow kicks in, you'll be glad of the webasto remote pre heater, heated seats and heated steering wheel.

I also recently bought a 2007 FFRR tdv8 - its a vogue SE so has a lot of nice toys. Love it so far, the build quality is a visible step down from the 90s Mercs I am used to but it is a nice place to be. You could buy 2.5 of mine for your budget, and I can imagine a newer 4.4 diesel would be even better.
I too have always wanted one so thought I would give it a try, and so far it is enjoyable and practical. I think there is a large group of folk who also prefer the L322 design to the newer ones.
