What car for driving through USA?
Discussion
In April next year myself and 2 others will be travelling to America, the plan is to fly to Miami. From there we will rent/buy cars and drive through to South Carolina- Charleston to be exact to meet a friend who will be working over there.
What car would you do this drive in?
Personally I want to experience some American muscle, for obvious reasons and a Ford Mustang or Corvette of some description appeal most

I usually rent a Cadillac ATS. Comfortable, refined, reasonably efficient and quick enough.
Also no 'rip off the tourist' rental rates either as with the 'Guaranteed Mustang' scam they've got going on where they rent you a $25k car for the price of renting a $80k luxury car because it says 'Mustang' on the back.

Mustangs are rubbish and not much fun. I had far more fun in a Dodge Ram hemi crew cab, so that is now my America car of choice when visiting.
Agree with this. The novelty of the Mustang wears off pretty quick whereas a pick-up has masses of space, a great view out and a 'lopey' gait that suits cruising. A very American experience.
And forget about buying a car, it's not like the UK and even utter rubbish seems to cost a bundle to buy.

Jut be wary of renting a massive SUV if you're looking to park anywhere inner city. They're fine on the open road, but a bit 'outsize' in some urban locales. Imagine trying to shoehorn an Escalade against a kerb in Manhattan!
ETA: For that sort of distance, I'd try and get a Lincoln Town Car. Lovely to look at, filled with fake wood and cheap leather, remote steering, lazy slusher, smooth riding. You should be able to rent one cheap since they're getting on now...

Thankfully this heap of crap has left all the rental fleets now as it has been out of production a while.Warning: if you aren't dropping the car back off in Miami prepared for your pants to be pulled down
I drove from New York to Miami earlier this year one way and was stung for one way surcharge. It was the maximum as drop off distance was over 1000 miles away from pick up.
I ended up spending $1000 for 8 days, but did get a Jeep Grand Cherokee which I quite liked!

I drove from Orlando to Charleston (and back) last August. I booked a full size and rather than the boring 4-pot Nissans etc., managed to rent a 300BHP V6 Impala - a proper barge.

It was ideal for that journey and the roads you'll encounter, which are more suited to a cruiser than a sports car. You'll want to stick to about 75mph (the limit is 70) though - I noticed quite a few cops waiting by the side of the Interstate as we went through Georgia & so a Corvette etc. would be completely wasted on this journey. Also, the Floridian cops do enforcement via aircraft...

...just get the Nissan Altima. Dirt cheap to rent; quite sufficient for your needs and will do your 1,000 mile round trip on about £50 of petrol!
I've driven nearly 3,400 miles in those cars this year and they do exactly what it says on the tin. Spend your money on booze and hookers instead!

An SUV or similar size. You'll feel more secure, be more comfy and have better sight-lines on the unfamiliar roads.
I've driven a fair few cars over there and the last couple of times have rented a Jeep (Compass) - very comfy and plenty of space. You might find the speed limits over there annoying in a muscle car and even when you have the chance to open it up you'll still get someone in a pickup up your arse
