Worse going South or North? (Not that it matters as I HAVE to go South, but just wondered!)

I am driving from Cheshire to Folkestone in the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

just how hideous will it be? Need to decide how long to allow.

Last year I came back from a wedding in Nottingham to Newcastle at about 7ish up the M1. The roads were pretty damn quiet both ways so I would suggest leaving later if you can. I guess rush hour will be slightly earlier on Christmas Eve as people will be doing half days etc. Just like the weather though, you can only look at past patterns and try and predict based on those but in reality there is always something unexpected that happens!
