Moving my savings from Australia back to UK. Forex help!
Discussion
Looking for some quick financial advice, related to foreign exchange:
I have accrued around $100,000 savings in Australia, working over the past three years. I intend to, and always have intended to return to the UK. Unfortunately I have let the money accrue here and have never transferred any back to UK as I have earned it. I fear that I have missed out on the best rates now.
The AUD:GBP rate has plummeted over the past two years and I hoped it would ‘come good’ again. Australia Reserve Bank (and others) has just stated that despite recent decreases, the Australian dollar still remains over-valued. To what extent, I’m not sure.
I don’t ‘need’ the money now as such. Although would expect to invest in UK property in the next 18 months or so. Do I ‘take the hit’ now or expect it to reduce further and hope for a recovery?
Help! Any general rules of thumb? Sorry, I’m out of my depth with this!
General advice would usually be, especially seeing as you don't need the cash immediately, to exchange it in 3-4 different chunks over a period of time. This way you won't be exposed to a single rate and the overall rate you get would be 'smoothed' over the time period. Obviously you'd need to take into account any transfer fees or commissions, but with a sum that large I think it would make sense.
As for what direction the rate will actually go in, who knows?!
