Long story short:
Have car insurance with Admiral (policy runs to Dec 20th)
Quote came to renew
Looked around, found a better price
Rang them up and said I wouldn't be renewing
OK they said... we'll lapse your policy
I say - just to be clear, I'm not cancelling, I'm just not renewing with you from the 20th
Thats ok they say, we know that, we will lapse your policy on the 20th

Get a letter as expected
"Sorry to hear you have decided not to renew with us"
"Go to this web site (admiral.. surrender certificate) and surrender your insurance certificate
"PS Failure to return/surrender certificate is an offence under the road traffic act 1988"

Its all on online including policy docs and certificate. They say its something to do with the Motor Insurance database and when I checked the link its going to remove my insurance from it, something I've not taken out but have with someone else. And why can't they do it on the 20th?

I'm inclined to ignore it, but why are they doing it? I've never had this before.

Thoughts?

I have never sent my certificate, ever, and never had a problem. Whether I don't renew or cancel halfway, never sent it back.

my son was stopped one night by BiB and they explained that these days the certs should really go back as they have people pay for a months ins, get the cert then cancel the ins and claim it's insured and produce the cert to that effect.

the problem they will have these days is that stuff is all online, i'm with admiral and i just had a letter saying they would auto-renew me if i didn't call them, nothing else has arrived.

really i ought to go online and make sure i can get it smile

Since it's all online do they want you to download the PDF and email it / print and post it to them ?!

No - it looks like a declaration that I've not renewed with them. I'm not even sure my new certificate (which I don't want) is there yet as its not the renewal date yet.

I had exactly the same.

Just ignore it.

Every time I have had this they have included a declaration to say it has been lost or damaged. Look for that. I always do that because I'm too lazy to look through the filing and will ensure it is damaged (By the shredder) when I get round to sorting the draw of important documents.

Looked at the site - it asks whether its suspension or cancellation. I don't classify it as either and their letter uses words Lapse and Surrender. Damn stupid.

I think I'm in the cell next door!

It's all completely irrelevant considering all of your details are captured on the Motor Insurer Database.

Even the police don't request to see insurance documents anymore and they are not needed for VED.

Just send it back if they are asking.

But why should he send it back

He paid for a years Motor insurance
He hasn't cancelled before year is out - just told them that he won't renew

When the policy expires the certificate will be also expired and therefore of no use

Sounds to me like a catch all letter from the insurance company to cover all bases in the event of a cancellation before policy expires

With all my cars I have all documentation for every year filed - car relevant info (MOT servicing/parts costs tax discs) gets handed to a new owner if I sell a car and personal info (expired insurance docs) get shredded at that point.

I use Admiral.
The only policy document I have is the one they emailed me and I printed out. If I never printed it, there's nothing to send back.

Last time I ignored that part letter and never heard anything.

they ask for the certificate back, because they send it out with the renewal notice, the law requires them to ask for it back for it to no longer have effect, oddly this seems to still apply to electronically sent ones which never had a paper copy, i believe in this case an email reply confirming you are aware the certificate no longer has any effect covers your obligations to return it.

To clear things up - I've not received a policy document for this year or next. They are on line

On-line they've created a policy document for next year that I don't want. Its not even due to start yet - I guess they did this when they sent the "do nothing and we will fleece you on an auto renewal"

They seem to want me to fill a form out that says I don't want a policy I've not bought.

They don't want me to send it back, they seem incapable of removing it from their own web site, and if I'd printed it off, they're not asking me to destoy it or return it. All they want me to do is fill in a form, online, copying across reference numbers they have given me, to say I don't want it. Feels a bit ar5e covering so if I get pulled by the police having not take out alternative insurance they can point to that saying definitively I didn't want it.

My concern is that, a, they'll take money if I don't (unlikely as they have acknowledged I don;t want to renew) and b, they'll do something stupid like cancel my new policy because I have to give the reg of the car and my name and details (possibly also unlikely),

It seems the sensible (I know, we're talking insurance companies) is for them not to put me on the insurance database for next year.

So - worst that can happen is they moan and try and take payment as I don't fill this form out?

The requirement to return a certificate of insurance is set out in the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Provision 147 Issue and surrender of certificates of insurance or security).

The policyholder must, within 7 days of cancellation, either return the certificate or make a statutory declaration that the certificate has been lost or destroyed.

I nearly came to grief in a big big way when I was asked to return an insurance certificate sent to me by email which I never got round to printing off. I had renewed the insurance on an old Merc. As part of the conversation I was informed by the girl on the phone that she wanted me to send back the insurance certificate for my other car, an MGTF, as the policy had been cancelled in the Summer. I was a tad taken aback.

It turned out that after I had sold my previous MX5 I was asked, by email, to return the insurance certificate for it. I emailed back saying that I had been issued the certificate by email and had never printed it off. As such, I was not able to return said item. The insurance company pinged some nippy emails thereafter the first of which I referred them to my previous Emailed explanation. After that, as I hadn't a car they were insuring and had the balance of my premium returned, I didn't pay ongoing communications much (sorry, any) attention.

A couple of months later I bought my TF. I phoned the same company received a very competitive quote and chose to insure the TF with them. Over the phone I was asked if I could return my insurance certificate for my long gone MX5. I informed the call handler that I had received it by Email and had never printed it off. She replied "that was ok". Within a week the Emails asking for my old MX5 insurance certificate restarted. This time they threatened if I didn't send it they would cancel my MG's insurance. Again I replied that I had never received one by post and never printed it off on my computer. I referred them to previous emails and the telephone conversation when I insured my MG and assumed the matter was closed. I went on holiday and missed the email informing me I was no longer insured and missed the money returned to my bank account. No letters were sent informing me of the situation.

I insured my previous car with Flux. When I sold it (and cancelled the insurance after 5 months without any refund) they wanted me to email back to confirm I'd destroyed any prints of the certificate.
Was also asked to delete all emails regarding the insurance - politely declined that one as I'd like to retain proof that I actually had insurance..
