I know recently that there was a thread discussing whether or not we thought Mr Schumacher was arrogant or not. Whether this is true or not I say hats of to Michael, as I've just heard that he has donated 10 Million USD to the tsunami appeal.

Mr Gates is the world's most generous philanthropist (sp?) so I doubt he has a guilty concience.

Schumacher is also one of the founding funding partners of the ICM charity supported by the recent Race of Champions. For a 'complete to$$er' he does an awful lot of good work.

They may not have been public about it themselves personally, there are a great many other people involved in their careers and money management who could enable it to slip. I think it is unfair that they are seen to be less of a giver because it has been made public.

Great that all this money is coming in.

Though it does makes me wonder what will happen if there is any excess money left over if the donations exceed the needs?

Sure it is unfair Mrs F , but you cant tell me that if they wanted to do it undercover it would still leak out to the press .

Maybe its to shame others into giving ?

I imagine a large part of it is publicity for the cause (not terribly necessary in the present case). One of the reasons a celebrity/public figure might choose to make the fact and nature of his/her donation known is to spur others into taking an interest. I don't think 'shame' is the appropriate word.

That's not to say that a great number of two-bit transient 'celebs' seem to use any and every opportunity to draw attention to themselves, but they often aren't the ones in a position to make £1m donations or otherwise make real contributions.

You only have to look at the comparison between someone like, ooh, Robbie Williams/Will Young/The Darkness etc.. and Bob Geldof.

I work for Motorola and we've had an internal email, the company is giving $1m, plus a similar value of radios and equipment and will also match donations made by staff.

I thought Bill Gates was already involved in a big project with Bono to get a lot of third world debt written off which would certainly help the countries affected, this was up and running well before they get hit by the tidal wave.
