diesel cars- the next mis-selling scandal?
Discussion
So, the mayor of Paris wants to ban diesel cars within 10 years and probably other big european cities will follow suit as they struggle to meet air quality targets. This government and the previous administration have given tax breaks to buyers of diesel cars for some time now, due to their lower carbon emissions, so if diesels now get taxed out of existence, is there a case for government compensation for mis-selling?!! On the other hand, is it time we owners of petrol engine cars had a reduction in our VED rates?

Sausages... (Cringe)
OP, that is the bog standard PH replies, just so that we have these covered already.
Personally, I will say absolutely not a hope in hell of any comp, the world is not that mad yet, or is it?...........
We won't get a reduction on VED for petrol cars. The whole thing was just a two stage scam to get more tax out of us. Stage 1: Demonize petrol cars by highlighting the relatively superior fuel mileage of diesel cars and apply higher rates of VED to petrol cars on that basis. Once everyone's got used to it it's time for Stage 2: Demonize diesel cars by highlighting all the s
t that they pump into the air and penalize people for driving them. Tax! Tax! Tax!

Just a small point, but there's no difference in the VED for petrol or diesel cars of the same emissions, so there is no tax break. It's just that diesels _tend_ to emit less CO2 than petrols, and CO2 is the basis for VED banding. There is at least one Band M and a stack of Band L diesels on the market, and a stack of Band A petrols....
