How do you disconnect the ice-indicator on a 98 Chimaera, when you are driving in cold wind (not quite freezing conditions) the damn red light flickers on and off and it's bloody annoying!

Wind Chill - it's operating as it should. Same as on my old Cerbera. I wouldn't disconnect it....

Wind Chill - it's operating as it should. Same as on my old Cerbera. I wouldn't disconnect it....


Nope... wind chill only happens to 'heated' bodies trying to maintain a temperature difference.


My Chimaera ice detector is on permanent red, and has been for six years, with the exception of one night when it was really cold and it flickered green for a few seconds.

The sensor is in an exposed place, and can fail very easily - I would put a bit of black tape over the LED if I were you...

Or simply cut off the sensor and short out the two wires.

So following that logic, a sensor on a vehicle just taken from a snowy, sub zero environment but sheltered from the wind into an area open to the full blast of a North Easterly, would not be able to correctly register the change caused by the apparent drop in temperature due to wind chill.... Hmmm

So how come a two thermometers one sheltered from and the other open to a cold wind, can register different temperatures?

I think that is wind chill.... It is the temperature differential that makes the sensor change from off to green to amber to red.

The most simple analogy is that of the old bimetal bar distorting to a lesser or greater degree proportional to the amount or lack of heat in its immediate viscinity. A simple temperature sensing circuit can be fashioned using a bimetallic bar in such a way that when heated to it's max the bar bends away from the first contact and hence no circuit. As temp drops the bar bends back towwards the first contact and lights say a green LED as a result, moving through amber and finally to red. The operation of this i.e. the speed of the deflection would I think be directly related to the temperature differential applied i.e. from a warmish 10 degrees C in a garage to 3 or 4 degrees C, but with a wind chill effectively reducing that to around zero, would probably cause a rapid deflection moving past both first contacts and hovering around the red.

The logic also applies to much more sophisticated thermal sensors.....

In this particular case maybe the LED/Sensor is at fault but the operation of it i.e. registering temperatures at which it needs to light up is in principle correct.

Incidentally, both the Cerbera and Chimera sensors were i think of the same type
