Annual Mileage
Discussion
What annual mileage do you all do in your second cars?
I’m wondering cos I’m about to get round to insuring my Wedge after its restoration.
Say I want to get to Goodwood Revival, a few PH meets and the odd Tuscan/Tasmin race I’ll clock up around 1000miles if I’m clinical about it (there & back, no site seeing, detours on route to see friends), but looking at things realistically, I currently do over 20k/year and that’s not business mileage, just commuting 15miles each way, visiting friends throughout the UK and going to various events.
Is 1500miles for a second car realistic or should I look at 3000 or 5000 cos a blast into North Wales for a summer evening is going to clock up atleast 100miles so that’s only 5 of them after I’ve been to Goodwood etc. before I run out of miles. As its going to be my first time insuring a sports car should I go for a very low mileage policy in my first year to build up that all important NCB? OR sod it and have the time of my life throwing money down the drain trying to afford an extortionate insurance bill and fuel.
Thoughts would be appreciated.

So far I have found that unless the sports car is a "classic" the price of insurance only drops by ten percent or so for a limited mileage policy.
My Porsche did 12,000 miles in its first year as my only car. Then 6,000 miles as my second car.
6,000 miles a year covers four or five track days, a touring holiday in the car and some daily usage nicely.
But there doesn't seem to be much discount available for 6,000 miles...one firm told me they only discounted at under 3,000!
If you are not doing 6,000 miles a year why bother owning the vehicle!

I was lead to believe that the anything below 3,000 miles was not worth the saving you may get, if there is a saving actually on offer. This came from insuring the MG Midget earlier this year. All the companies I approached only offered 3,000 miles as a lowest mileage limit.
In the end I paid only £95 and was told this was the cheapest premium they could do and restricting the mileage would not make any difference.
Another option is to take a minimum you think you will need and if your getting close to that ring and ask for the limit to be raised and pay the additional premium. When we brough the Chimaera I restricted the mileage to 6,000 and low and behold in 6 months I had done 5,500! I phoned the insurance co to increase the limit thinking it was going to be lots of dosh and ended up paying £70 to increase it to unlimited!
