Just heard on Radio 2 someone had emailed in to Jeremy Vine saying that apparently the Second Coming would be preceeded by war & natural disasters, and he equated Afghanistan, Gulf War II and now the tsunami to being these precursors.

Run for the hills...

We're all DOOMED, I tell ya! DOOMED

Name any year, ever, that didn't have a war or a natural disaster.

Technically, this person is right - The book of Revelation tells of the second coming of Christ as being preceded by wars, natural disasters etc etc.

However, what he fails to mention is that there is nothing left to be fulfilled according to the prophesy of The Bible. That is to say that the same statement could have been made 100+ years ago.

Either way, we're still headed down the tubes - New Labia has seen to that

...and the Bible (Old & New Testaments) is simply a handbook for a particular type of religious life (Judeo/Christian). It has nothing to do with truth and the Gospels are certainly not eye-witness accounts of real events.

Some people will believe anything.

It's about time all religion was ignored and a new moral code devised. (devoid of gods/mumbo jumbo, etc.)
The world would become a much nicer and rational place without all this superstitious nonsense and its unthinking believers.

Before anyone jumps on me, I was brought up in a Christian-Brethern background and my family's roots in our local Gospel Hall can be traced back well into the 1800's.

I now live a life the polar opposite of how I was brought up, at least where Christian living is concerned anyway.

Despite this, I am still a believer.

However, there is no way I have ever shoved my beliefs down other people's throats and nor do I have any intention of doing so

So, in summary..... and make not

I got knocked November 2003 by the Jehovas witness' and as you would told them where to go, but having just had an argument with my better half I must have looked a bit down, I never forget this guys face as he put his arm round me and calmly said what do you need to see to listen to us? I said i am a man of science show me facts. He said Christmas day, there will be distruction in the mother land. If there is will you listen?
OK says i, see you later.
Christmas Day, Iraq hit by Earthquake many dead. I jokingly said, **it he'll be back. but put it down to coincidence.
He did come back and i again told him to bugger off.

He came back three weeks ago, very peacful man he asked again if i would join them for a reading. I again politly this time said i would not.

He said to mark his words and that there will great loss of life from a natural "warning" at Christmas.
And next year it will be greater still.

So im off down the "church" to back date my membership!!

On Christmas Eve I completed a 5 month read cover-to-cover of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments(New Internationl Version).

As metioned above, war, famine, plagues, earthquakes, etc, are perennial.

Revelation is a dream. Christianity was invented and lobbied by Paul, as were lots of new laws that are not mentioned anywhere before. Confession is never mentioned anywhere.

Religion has been, and always will be, pure dogmatic propaganda. But it was very good propaganda in its time for developing civilised societies and improving peoples' morals and values where before there was nothing.

However, now that the world has developed and we can communicate intercontinentally much more effectively, we no longer need to do the worshipping thing. It's anachronistic and holding us back. Let's keep the guidelines, as they are great, but not the fire and brimstone.

Remember, you don't have to be a Christian to believe in God. A lot of people forget that.

Yep, Christians don't have a monopoly on ignorance.

Of course not, I don't care what anyones' beliefs are as long as they don't try to take the moral 'high ground'.
Although I am rather confused as you have said that you are a Believer but don't follow the rules.

I myself am ignorant on many issues but try to overcome this with a rational investigation of the evidence (i.e. The Scientific Method).
I don't believe in gods but am undecided about 'life after death' and am certainly anti-religion as it seems to be merely a means of subjugating and controlling people.

Simple really.

If I had to follow the rules, I wouldn't have sex outwith marriage, I wouldn't drink, I wouldn't watch certain films, wouldn't read certain books, wouldn't listen to certain music, wouldn't go to pubs / clubs - in fact, I probably wouldn't even be with my girlfriend - as she isn't a Christian.

I am what is known in Christian circles, as a "Backslider"
