So I've bought myself a daily runner to go to the station; drop the little ones off to nanny & nursery en route etc. I picked up a nearly new basic mini which should be free for the first twelve months then £20 every year thereafter - it is only a week old so should still have 11months free of the allowance. So I've been on line and been on the phone to register it and had to pay £20. Ok so it's tiny money - but - its the principle I have a problem with - if its supposed to be free for the first 12months it should be free. I'm guessing it means its free to the first person who registers the car as new......

Cheeky buggers those government boys and girls.....

It's not supposed to be free for the first 12 months, it's free for the first tax period. If that's 12 months, then great. But it could be 2 weeks, if the initial owner decides to sell.

So for those people buying a class M car they pay over a thousand. Then they sell it after 6months and don't get any money back??? Then a new owner comes along and the gov get another monkey???

What a nice little earner!

Course they get their money back, dvla refund whatever's left of the tax period they have remaining, the free tax perks is a different scenario.

They don't actually. They get the "normal" portion back but not the first year extra part.

What you should do is start an E-petition.

Never mention any extra part, hence the two different scenarios ...
One car has free tax for first period, car sells after six months, new buyer has to pay valid rate of tax.
Second scenario has car in different higher tax bracket, initial buyer pays tax, sells again after six months, gets remaining outstanding tax refunded, new buyer pays full rate tax again.

hehe

To be fair though, I wonder if "they" considered these scenarios when the new scheme was put together.

Had it all along and replied as such to the statement, I've had a long day at work but pretty sure I had no issues with it.
