Given that there have been a number of lady-men on here recently talking about how to achieve the perfect roux, I thought I would ask this:

What are the best sandwiches or baguettes you have had or can make? Hot or cold doesn't matter.

A personal favourite is a nice baguette, with roast chopped chicken and mayo, with tarragon mixed in (must be tarragon), and fresh iceberg lettuce.

Another one I really like is the Subway Steak and Cheese melt, with sweetcorn and mayo and BBQ sauce.

So what is the piece de resistance of the lunchtime sarnie in your book? Hopefully this will be a really useful thread, as I am up for trying some new ideas at least.

I used to love Monster Munch and Dairylea....

Before we moved offices, there was a deli near the old place that roasted their own meats on the premisses. They did this absolutely divine salted beef which was so tender it almost melted in your mouth.

Just that, still slightly warm from the oven, in a sandwich with nothing else, perhaps a slight dollop of horseradish.

Heavenly.

A good coronation chicken (my mum makes it with apricot or mango and juicy raisins which is gorgeous) on a nice baguette or a big floured roll.

Tarragon is a bit too peaky in a sandwich IMHO, I'd go for fresh chopped corriander

The best sandwich tricky

Possibly a good BLT

Fresh crusty white bread, lightly salted butter, full fat mayo, cracked black pepper, iceberg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, hot Sussex dry cured thick sliced bacon (not overcooked) and another bit of bread

Has to be in that order, the mayo has to be on the buttered bit of bread otherwise it soaks in. The pepper sticks nicely to the mayo. The tomoatoes warm up from the heat of the bacon but the lettuce doesn't. You can butter the other peice of bread but the butter will melt and soak in (tasty but personal taste and more fat)

white loaf, buttered on outside.

layer of mozarella, layer of wendsleydale.

2 layers of cold roast chicken (real stuff not packaged)

then layer of wendsleydale then mozarella then white loaf buttered on outside.

stick it in the george forman and TA-DA! best sanger in the world!

in second place is the hot sausage and egg bun,
in third is the evergreen bacon buttie

Sausage roll sarnie:

Warburtons extra thick WHITE bread.

BUTTER.

Warm sausage roll.

Ketchup.

Or "grilled" cheese sarnie:

Butter bread on OUTSIDE.

Cheese (plus whatever else takes your fancy) on inside.

Non stick frying pan - but don't try to turn it over too soon, or it'll fall to bits.

This really isn't helping, as we're both dieting so we don't look like hippos in the wedding photos later this year....

What about that classic health disaster - the chip butty?

Fresh home made chips. Fresh home baked white bread.
Doorstep slices, a smear of butter, then a layer of well-browned chips. Just the tiniest drop of vinegar and then salt well - to taste I suppose. Other slice of bread on top.

Yum.

I do the ultimate bacon Royale sandwich, are you ready?

You need:

Good bacon rashers
Half a dozen Asparagus tips
An Egg
Heinz Tomato Sauce or a good chutney relish or Hollandaise sauce.
Two slices of fresh white loaf, thickly cut

Method:

Fry the asparagus tips in butter until they are becoming crispy (well done).
Fry the bacon in olive oil until it is just becoming crispy on the edge.
Egg is best scrambled with a little cream or fried in olive oil easy over.
Lightly toast the bread, or have fresh if preferred.
Add ketchup or relish to taste.

The above with a Hollandaise sauce is even better.

Will you all stop going on about mayonnaise please!

Can I have a warmed baguette containing rare steak and caramelised onions please. With two slices of granary bread containing dry cure bacon with the fat cut off and a drizzle of HP to follow. And chunky peanut butter on toasted, buttered granary to finish.

Peanut butter and raspberry/strawberry jam is surprisingly delicious.

The Americans love it.

For real coronary suicide try frying the above sandwich in butter - delicious!

For the ultimate bacon butty it has to be my mum's home made sundried tomato bread, smoked bacon cooked on a George Forman and a goodly dollop of heinz t.k.

Ideal for hangovers
