...but you daren't correct him because he's your dad.

I'll start off. When he's starting a car in the cold, he revs the arse off it to get it going before setting off. When jump starting a car, he will rev the arse off the donor car. I think in his mind, it causes more volts to pass to the dead car. If a car doesn't start, he will spray loads of WD40 into the vicinity of the plugs.

Over to you.

Revving the 'donor' car in a jump start makes total sense, especially if using a smaller car to jump a large diesel or similar. It's possible that the alternator won't keep up with the current draw at idle.

My Dad is embarrassingly bad at reversing trailers, enough that I (Without even a trailer license) have taken over when he got out to assess the situation.

When it comes to my Dad - on motoring issues he asks me

On woodwork/fibreglass activities I ask him

Works out for the best both ways - he realised when I was 15 years old and rebuilt a motorcycle engine on the kitchen table in an afternoon that I seemed to like stuff with oil in them and could appreciate that his circular saw would provide the required clean up material when the bloody engine leaked like a sieve after the first attempt............ Got it right the second time wink

he uses any electrical systems as little as possible. I don't know if he thinks it will wear the alternator out.

Air con never used.
Blowers used as little as possible even when the windscreen misted up.
Never uses the heated front screen.
As soon as in a built up area (street lights) he switches the headlights off, side lights only.

Driving about, side lights only, visibilty reduced due to steamed up windscreen and 70 year old eyes driving. Scary stuff, but he won't listen.
Had many an argument about it but he wont listen.

That's what it was made for. Plug leads and plugs.

And when we had distributor caps, we'd spray a goodly dose inside to dispel damp.;)

He used to drive 10 miles there and back to buy the cheapest petrol. I tried to persuade him that that low octane Jet rubbish would give him worse mpg (my Marcos barely ran and detonated like a bd on the stuff) but he wouldn't listen.....

My manual specifically states to hold the revs of the donor car a bit before jump starting.

not a car but the last comment where he was "100% correct..." was when he was building he bbq.

Is that not upside down?
His reply " Dont be so bloody stupid, the manual tells you to build it like this.."

I sat back with a smile when he realised the bbq oven was somehow above the upside down bbq grills. Think that made his worse lol

But think of the fuel he is saving! It might even be a measurable amount after, say, a year or two?

Completely normal. I vaguely recall many years ago that my little Fiesta actually stalled when trying to jump-start a largeish diesel car.

Over to you.
On most cars with proper oil pressure gauges a high-idle will bring the oil pressure up quicker. It can take a while to creep up at idle. In addition, in ye olden days (and modern days with rebuilt engines) the accepted wisdom was to hold some revs on a cold engine to increase oil flow and bring the temperature up faster. On new cars, for emissions purposes, you just get told to drive off immediately which ultimately achieves much the same thing. On older cars though, they'd sometimes cut out when you clutched for the first gear change.
