Well, a couple of years ago I wanted an M3 CSL so badly it hurt at times, and I was a property sale away from getting one. Unfortunately, the sudden upsurge in classic/rare car prices meant it was unattainable when the opportunity arose, and instead I had to settle for the closest alternative which for me was a Z4M Coupe. Has anyone else missed the glaring opportunity to own the car of their dreams? If so, what did you buy instead?

Was close to buying an NSX when they were low.

The one I was looking at sold to Ireland, lost its Cat D and half its mileage and came back a month later at twice the price.

Got an S2000 instead.

I'm actually surprised that the prices NSX's haven't shot up a lot more considering their rarity.

Price is driven by demand rather then supply, so rarity isn't enough on its own. See also the Lotus Esprit thread.

Until you get up to really silly money it's the "want" factor which drives prices.

I did see an NR750 advertised for £15k many years ago - not long after that they were at £30k and AQG shows them advertised at £65k+ (or even £100k for very low mileage).

I was offered one of the original roadgoing 205 T16s for under £20k about 7-8 years ago. Of course I didn't have the cash, and the thought of trying to explain to the bank manager that I wanted to buy a 25 year old left hand drive Peugeot 205 for twenty grand was too much to contemplate.

It'd be worth nearer £80k now.

Many years ago I lusted after a Sunbeam Tiger, but then classic car prices went through the roof and the boat was well and truly missed. frown

Went out with a girl who had an MGB GT V8, so the V8 itch was scratched there for a while. smile

When I first moved to Dubai early 2004, I unearthed a E39 M5 with delivery mileage, still covered in various bits of shipping protection - Le Mans Blue, Cream Interior, fully optioned - and I was around 15% short (cash) of the asking price. Couldn't get finance here as I didn't have the legalities in place yet.

Was so gutted.

It went the day after I looked at it.

It was up for AED 190k - which back then was around GBP 30k weeping

The BMW Z8. I was probably about £10k shy of getting into one about 10 years ago, but they were so cheap back then (who wanted a left-hand drive car slated by the press?). The prices have gone somewhat north since.

This is also why I really want to get a cheap Porsche 996 in 2015, as I think that prices are going to go up now that they are 2 models old and people realise that 1) This is silly money for a 911 and 2) It's a relatively affordable fix to sort out the IMS and bore scoring issues.

Agreed. I was very keen on a 993 when they were cheaper than 996s, but missed that one too. Now, I'd love a 964 Carrera 4, but silly money.

When I was looking at swapping my 200sx I really wanted a R34 Skyline GTR but my budget was £20k and they were still fetching around the £30k mark so I ended up in a TVR Cerbera 4.5 instead but I would still love to own a R34 GTR.

On the one hand I can join this thread as I passed up a number of nice but not stellar E30 M3's 4 or 5 years ago when they were asking £7.5-10k for them.

I also thought, in 2007 that buying a house would be a better place to put my money than buying an M1 for £50k, although storage would have been a headache...

On the flip side I think that I bought my 968CSs at about the right time to have a few years to really enjoy them properly...

Been driving a nice enough Mk5 GT Golf about the last 18 months or so but keep looking at the price of 996 C4S and already know that the running costs are do able.

Then I keep thinking that there are already a couple of Tivs in the garage and there's a really nice barn conversion that the Mrs likes just down the road...

ETA how could I forget my most stupid move! January 2006. Just completed on the sale of the house I had with the ex and determined to buy myself something fun to drive after having to sell my beloved Mk3 16v GTI for an A6 Avant auto a few years before. I had a choice. 2.5 Boxster for £14,500 or £26k for a 964RS... I decided that i didn't want to have quite that much money in an unloved Porsche and hadn't really liked 911's that much anyway... Flicking idiot!!!

Looked at a few a while back and someone I know well had one for a few months.

Lovely cars but in this day and age so outclassed it's untrue. Running costs are not that low considering it's a Honda and it doesn't have the cache of Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche.

Yes it is a great handling car and it has the Senna halo but otherwise it just doesn't have 'it'.

That said now that 348's an the like are going upwards they will likely drag them up as well.

I would tend to agree with that. I bought a 355 instead of the NSX (they were pretty much the same price when I bought). Although it pains me to say it, the NSX is better to drive, but the 355 wins on looks and noise. I do love the NSX though. I used one from a car club quite a lot before I bought my own and it is a peach. Would love to have one of each!

I remember seeing a lovely Ferrari 512BB in the PH classifieds for months at £35k and thinking I could buy that if I blew all my savings and borrowed a little bit more. Instead I did the sensible thing and bought a Ferrari 308 GT4 which has been very kind to me in the maintenance dept so far.

Nearly went for a lovely standard Impreza P1 back in 2008, just before they started getting silly.

Probably one of my biggest regrets car wise.

Always lusted after an Integrale. Went to see one about 12 years ago, was put off by the huge history file with some big bills. Bought a 20V Fiat Coupe Turbo instead. Other half loathes the HF to this day so unlikely to go back but the exact reason I rejected that one then is the reason I bought my Tuscan last year. If you can afford to keep it going, the thicker the invoice file the better on a high performance car.

I wish I'd bitten the bullet and bought a DeLorean in the mid 90s when they were still £5000 - £8000. I know they are underwhelming to drive and I could have got it out of my system and moved on!

I was very very close to purchasing my poster car, a mid 90's Viper RT/10. Love everything about these, silly silly engine, great curves and massive noise. I spent many lunch times on the owners club forums, looking at sale prices in the states (worked out around £17k plus shipping) but I decided to get a TVR Tuscan instead! Don't regret it as that was a wonderful car, but can't shake that "What if" feeling.
